Who Are We?
The Department of Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Services is the recognized leader in the delivery of substance use and mental health services to the residents of Santa Barbara County. The Department’s Mission is to promote the prevention of and recovery from addiction and mental illness among individuals, families and communities by providing effective leadership and delivering state-of-the-art, culturally competent services.
The Department’s goal is to move clients toward a recovery model that prioritizes independence and integration into the community. Toward this end, ADMHS practices a system which includes Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) under contract with the department and utilizes other community resources for the prevention, treatment and recovery from addiction and mental illness. We welcome applicants interested and committed towards the advancement of our efforts to creatively and effectively serve the residents of Santa Barbara County.
The Position
The Patients’ Rights Advocate ensures that recipients of mental health services in licensed mental health or community care facilities are notified of their rights; conducts or oversees investigations of complaints from or concerning recipients of services; provides patients’ rights training to mental health facilities and service providers, and monitors programs for compliance with statutory patients’ rights provisions; serves as liaison with the Public Defender, Public Guardian, County Counsel, hearing officers, courts, and the California State Patients’ Rights Office.
This recruitment is being conducted to fill one part-time (20 hours per week) position in Santa Barbara in the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Services. Although the current vacancy is listed as being in Santa Barbara, the department may consider locating the position in Santa Maria. Upon request, some flexibility may be given to the current work site location of the individual selected.
However, travel between North and South County work sites will be required. A county vehicle will be available for work related travel.
The incumbent must be able to speak, read, and write fluently in English and Spanish in order to provide education and counseling to clients. There is a bi-weekly bilingual allowance that is pro-rated for part-timers.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience working in the mental health or healthcare system advocating on behalf of mentally ill persons or their families, preferably as a Patients Rights Advocate; will have excellent written and oral communication skills; be able to read, understand, and apply rules and regulations; be able to serve as a voice in advocating for clients; represent the department, clients, and the County with tact and diplomacy.
Hours
The incumbent will work 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
