Position Summary: The Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) performs essential diagnostic testing and analysis to support high-quality patient care at North Valley Hospital District (NVHD). This role involves collecting, processing, and analyzing biological specimens to provide accurate and timely results that assist in diagnosing and treating medical conditions. Working as part of a mission-driven team, the MLT ensures compliance with laboratory standards, quality assurance protocols, and state and federal regulations.
Key ResponsibilitiesSpecimen Collection and Processing:
- Collect, label, and process biological specimens such as blood, urine, and tissue samples following proper protocols.
- Ensure accurate patient identification and sample labeling to maintain the integrity of results.
- Prepare specimens for testing or transport to external laboratories as needed.
Laboratory Testing and Analysis:
- Perform routine and specialized diagnostic tests in areas such as hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and transfusion services.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Analyze test results for accuracy and validity, ensuring timely reporting to providers.
Quality Assurance and Compliance:
- Conduct quality control checks and maintain accurate documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, including CLIA, CAP, and OSHA.
- Participate in regular proficiency testing and ensure adherence to best practices in laboratory procedures.
- Assist in maintaining laboratory policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
Communication and Reporting:
- Accurately document and report test results in the laboratory information system (LIS) and electronic medical record (EMR).
- Communicate critical values promptly to the appropriate healthcare team members.
- Collaborate with providers and team members to address testing needs and support patient care.
Education and Training:
- Stay current with advancements in laboratory science, including new testing methodologies and regulatory updates.
- Provide training and mentorship to new laboratory staff, students, or interns as needed.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain required certifications.

- Completes mandatory training timely.
- Demonstrates the ability to make decisions, take appropriate action, and follow tasks through to completion.
- Effectively collaborates with peers and team members, using tactful, diplomatic communication techniques in potentially sensitive or emotionally charged situations.
- Demonstrates leadership responsibility and skills, including planning and completing duties with minimal directions from the supervisor when appropriate.
- Performs other duties as assigned, provided skills, abilities, and qualifications are appropriate and sufficient training is provided.
