The Surgical Organ Recovery Specialist (SORS) III is responsible for the surgical dissection, removal, preparation, and recommendation for transplantation of deceased donor livers, kidneys, pancreata, and small intestines.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSRecovery and Distribution of Organs and TissuesSORS has the primary responsibility for supervision in the donor operative room consistent with Clinical Advisory Committee (CAC)/Vice President, Clinical Operations (VPCO) approvals.

Assumes the lead and participates in the procurement livers, kidneys, pancreata, and small intestines from brain-dead (BD) and donation after circulatory death (DCD) donors in compliance with local and national standards for organ transplantation.

Provides advice and counsel to Life Center Northwest (Life Center) staff when addressing potential adverse events/reactions/outcome reports, surgical errors, potential disease transmissions, or complaints that are medical in nature, have potential medical consequences, or that may affect the safety of recovered organs

Mediates disputes between recovery and/or transplant surgeons and programs, including real-time consultations.

Assists and advises in the allocation of organs with transplant programs.

Is responsible for providing direction on organ perfusion and preservation of organs for transplant.

Is accountable for timely, complete, and accurate documentation for all appropriate surgical donation related materials, i.e., donor chart.

Participates in the adoption of new recovery techniques such as NRP to increase organ utilization.

This position requires regular, time-sensitive travel to and from case activity across the region. As such, the ability to independently and reliably commute between locations is essential to fulfilling the responsibilities of the role. Due to the nature of the work, which may involve urgent or unscheduled travel, personal driving capability is a critical operational need.

Development Collaborates internally and externally with others to develop and promote practices that increase the number of organs recovered for transplantation and for research.

Ensures a respectful and collaborative professional working relationship with all colleagues, ensuring a team approach for the success of Life Center.

Serves as a role model and resource to internal staff and external contacts and colleagues.

Participates in the Clinical Advisory Meetings and associated subcommittee meetings as  conjunction with Life Center staff, review data regarding organ utilization with designated transplant centers; recommend changes in practice when necessary to increase utilization and ensure protocols are consistent with the current standards of practice.

Pursues professional development activities that provide continued growth, expertise, and maintenance of professional skills.

Quality Assurance and Compliance Reviews any reports of surgical damage; provides follow-up to transplant surgeons in the cases of reported occurrences.

Assists in the development, review and approval of new and existing surgical policies and preservation procedures in the recovery, evaluation, and placement of donated organs.

Adheres to quality standards and legal compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies including but not limited to, Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO), Organ Procurement and Transplant Network (OPTN), United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).Training and Education Develops and provides instruction for organ recovery transplant Fellows and surgeons interested in the organ donation procurement process, including the training and education.

Develops and provides instruction to the Surgical First Assists on assisting in organ recovery surgery and assessment of advanced surgical skills.

Supervision This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.
