Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs a variety of technical, clerical, and information systems-related procedures across multiple laboratory areas including Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Blood Bank. The MLT operates laboratory equipment following established policies to provide timely and accurate test results to healthcare providers. This position is essential for performing laboratory tests efficiently and ensuring high-quality patient care while participating in Laboratory Quality Improvement programs.

  • Analyze laboratory findings to verify the accuracy of results.
  • Enter data from medical tests and clinical results into computer systems for storage.
  • Set up, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Prepare and analyze slides and specimens from human blood, tissue, or other cells.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain equipment for quantitative and qualitative analysis in various fields such as chemistry and microbiology.
  • Establish and monitor quality assurance programs to ensure laboratory result accuracy.
  • Collect and analyze blood samples to determine cell counts, morphology, blood group, and compatibility for transfusions using microscopic techniques.
  • Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids like blood, urine, and spinal fluid to identify normal and abnormal components.
  • Assist in blood typing and other routine blood tests.
  • Provide technical information regarding test results to healthcare professionals and family members.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Organizational Management (30%): Manage time effectively to complete technical tasks within realistic timelines. Control laboratory equipment and adjust instruments for efficient laboratory procedures, utilizing computers to operate instruments and handle data.
  • Analysis and Interpretation (30%): Analyze and interpret laboratory results with considerable judgment, covering areas including hematology, chemistry, blood bank, microbiology, and urinalysis.
  • Equipment Maintenance (20%): Maintain instruments and assigned laboratory sections as directed, ensuring scheduled maintenance and monitoring consumables.
  • Specimen Collection (20%): Perform specimen collection on patients of all ages, including venipuncture, capillary draws, and instructing nursing staff on correct methods of sample collection.

Must possess an active Phlebotomist License and an active Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist (MA-P) license in Washington State.
