Role Overview & Clinical Responsibilities Summary of Functions:

The Clinical Massage Therapist provides a high-quality therapeutic massage treatment for patients presenting with acute, chronic, and preventative conditions. Working as an integral part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team, the therapist interprets medical referrals, conducts clinical assessments, verifies insurance coverage suitability, and delivers tailored, evidence based care to improve patient outcomes and overall well-being.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Clinical Practice and Patient Care:

  • Referral & Chart Interpretation :
    Read, interpret, and apply medical referrals and diagnoses to design targeted, therapeutic massage treatment plans.
  • Insurance Coverage Verification:
    Review patient coverage to ensure massage therapy services are covered under their specific insurance plan and that all necessary referrals are in place prior to treatment.
  • Interprofessional

    Collaboration:

    Consult and collaborate directly with referring providers (physicians, chiropractors, etc.) to coordinate care, discuss progress, and align on treatment goals.
  • Patient Assessment and Safety:
    Evaluate patient medical history, current symptoms, and contraindications prior to every session to ensure safe and effective care.
  • Clinical Documentation:
    Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant chart notes in Athena 1 to document progress and support the billing department’s claims processing.

Operations & Departmental Support

  • Treatment Room Management:
    Prepare, sanitize, and stock treatment rooms between sessions, strictly adhering to hygiene standards and blood borne pathogen protocols.
  • Patient Experience & Flow:
    Deliver compassionate, professional care while managing session timing to maintain punctual appointment schedules.
  • Teamwork & Governance:
    Participate in interdepartmental team meetings, mandatory training sessions, and organizational committees as requested.
  • Compliance & Confidentiality:
    Maintain strict patient privacy in full compliance with HIPPA and organizational regulations.

Education, Examination & Licensing

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • Massage Therapy

    Education:

    Graduation from an accredited or state-recognized school of massage therapy (min 500 hours).
  • Board Certification/Examination:
    Successful completion and passing of required state licensing board examination.
  • State Licensure:
    Active, current Washington State Massage Therapist/Practitioner license in good standing.
  • Business License:
    Valid Massage Therapy Business License (as required by state/local jurisdiction).

Experience & Clinical Background

  • Clinical

    Experience:

    Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience in a private practice, medical clinic, doctor’s office, or chiropractic setting.
  • Spa Experience Consideration:
    Up to one (1) year of experience in a professional spa environment may be considered when combined with demonstrated clinical experience.
  • Modalities:
    Proficient in multiple therapeutic massage modalities tailored to clinical outcomes (eg., Deep Tissue, Swedish, Neuromuscular Therapy, Shiatsu, Reflexology or related clinical techniques)

Licensure, Credentialing & Other Requirements

  • Professional Record:
    Clean standing with state licensing boards and healthcare credentialing databases, free of unexplainable disciplinary or adverse actions.
  • Third-Party Credentialing:
    Eligible and able to complete credentialing with 3rd-party payors/ insurers so the organization can process claims for services rendered.
  • Tribal Requirements:
    Ability to obtain and maintain a Tribal Work permit and obtain tribally sponsored malpractice insurance (if applicable).
  • Certifications:

    Current certification in Basic First Aid and CPR.
  • Health & Safety:
    Ability to maintain up-to-date immunizations as required by organizational health policies.
  • Anatomical Knowledge:
    In-depth understanding of the musculoskeletal system, kinesiology, and pathology related to soft tissue treatment.
