MEDICAL SCIENCE LIAISON — ONCOLOGY
Field-Based | Non-Promotional Medical Role
Role SummaryThe Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is the field-based scientific voice of the medical organization. The MSL builds peer-level relationships with oncology thought leaders and treating institutions, conducts compliant scientific exchange on clinical data, and generates field insight that shapes evidence, guideline, and pathway strategy. This role is non-promotional and carries no sales objectives or revenue accountability.
Core Responsibilities- Scientific exchange. Deliver balanced, data-driven discussion of the clinical, pharmacologic, and pharmacokinetic profile of assets in the therapeutic area to academic and community oncologists; respond to unsolicited requests for information within approved processes.
- Thought-leader engagement. Map, segment, and engage national and regional key opinion leaders; own a defined set of leader relationships and maintain engagement plans against clear scientific objectives.
- Advisory boards and congresses. Plan and execute advisory boards, participate in congress activity, and support abstract, publication, and podium planning sequenced against evidence milestones.
- Account and territory ownership. Manage a territory built on oncology density rather than geography — typically 12–15 priority academic and network accounts — prioritizing institutions that control pathway and formulary decisions above raw volume.
- Evidence generation support. Facilitate investigator-initiated study discussions, support real-world evidence and outcomes research activity, and identify data gaps the current evidence base does not close.
- Guidelines and pathways. Provide the scientific input that supports compendia recognition and clinical pathway inclusion, partnering with medical leadership on submission content and post-decision maintenance.
- Insight generation. Capture and report field insights on treatment sequencing, unmet need, and competitive landscape to inform medical, HEOR, and access strategy.
- Cross-functional partnership. Partner with market access on dossier and pathway pull-through and with commercial partners on scientific accuracy, maintaining a clear separation between medical and promotional activity.
- Advanced doctoral degree — PharmD, PhD, or MD, NP/PA
- Field medical experience in oncology, or equivalent clinical/scientific experience.
- Demonstrated ability to hold peer-level scientific conversations with academic investigators.
- Willingness to travel extensively across a national, field-based territory.
- Therapeutic depth. Fluency in solid-tumor oncology — treatment sequencing, combination regimens, and the evidentiary limits of what a given data set can and cannot claim.
- Scientific credibility. Able to earn and hold the respect of investigators and guideline authors as a scientific peer, not a communicator of messages.
- Compliance discipline (non-negotiable). Rigorous on the promotional boundary — unsolicited-request handling, off-label limits, and pre-approval information exchange rules.
- Independent judgment. Able to run advisory boards, congress engagement, and study discussions independently with minimal oversight.
- Strategic account thinking. Understands how academic centers drive community prescribing and how institutional pathway committees actually decide.
- Collaboration without role drift. Works closely with access and commercial functions while maintaining medical independence.
- Depth and quality of KOL and priority-account engagement.
- Quality and actionability of field insights.
- Contribution to evidence and publication milestones.
- Support of compendia and pathway submissions.
