Surgical Technologist and Sterile Processing Technician Schedule

Monday - Friday; 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM; hours may vary; additional hours vary depending on case load.

The Surgical Technologist and Sterile Processing Technician will be responsible for the delivery of care to surgical patients, ensuring efficient function within the Surgery Department. This role requires instruction in technical aspects of surgery to medical staff and, in some cases, patients and their families. The Sterile Processing Technician is tasked with maintaining the cleanliness and proper care of surgical equipment, acting as the first line of defense against infection and ensuring equipment performance.

• Prepare and maintain surgical instrument sets for operating procedures, keeping in mind the surgery type and surgeon's preferences.
• Scrub, gown, and glove all members of the surgical team for procedures.
• Drape patients according to established methods and assist with tissue retraction, sponge blood, and irrigate wounds as needed.
• Maintain sterile technique, including counting sponges and sharps in collaboration with the Circulating Nurse.
• Prepare and clean the OR before and after procedures, ensuring a smooth transition between cases.
• Properly identify and preserve specimens collected during surgery.
• Assist with the training and education of new personnel and maintain inventory levels of surgical supplies.
• Follow sterilization protocols for surgical instruments and equipment handling.
• Monitor sterilization equipment, operate autoclaves, and maintain organized surgical trays.

• Successful graduation from a Surgical Technologist training program or a minimum of one year of experience in OR scrub nursing.
• Current BLS certification is required.
• Certification as a Central Supply Technician is a plus.
• Thorough knowledge of medical asepsis as it applies to the operating room.
• Ability to handle numerous surgical instruments and maintain proper inventory levels.
• Ability to work under pressure and tolerate blood and body tissue exposure.
