Role Overview
The Family Case Manager represents DCS and supports families in a local or central DCS office. You will protect families and children from abuse and neglect, maintain or reunify families whenever possible, and, when in the best interest of the child, achieve a permanent home or independent living for children unable to be reunited with their families.
This position is in Washington, Indiana, and will serve Daviess County and surrounding counties as needed.
SalaryStarting salary is $47,320.00, commensurate with education and work experience.
Responsibilities- Investigate reported incidents of child abuse, neglect, or dependency, determine substantiation, and develop recommendations to a Juvenile Court or County Director.
- Assess risk to child, determine if child is in imminent danger, and remove child from family if warranted.
- Perform needs assessments for families and children reported as abused/neglected.
- Testify and prepare pre‑dispositional, progress, and briefing reports, and develop “informal adjustment” plans.
- Develop case plans and discharge/transition programming to assist families and children toward self‑sufficiency and permanent home.
- Monitor service capability of treatment programs and providers to ensure alignment with case plans.
- Accept on‑call responsibility to receive and investigate allegations of abuse/neglect.
- Conduct home studies, family histories, and recommend placement for adoption.
- Visit children in out‑of‑home placements to coordinate reunification, adoption, or independent living.
- Maintain data to assist management in evaluating family and child needs trends.
Academic and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree, or
- Associate degree with at least two (2) years of human services experience, or
- 30 college credit hours from an accredited institution with at least four (4) years of human services experience, or
- Five (5) or more years of human services experience.
- Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of social work, casework, sociology, counseling, and emerging treatment theories.
- Comprehensive knowledge of state/federal laws, regulations, and standards affecting child protection, foster care, family preservation, and adoption.
- Knowledge of related social services programs and ability to coordinate among programs.
- Specialized knowledge of behavioral sciences as they affect care and treatment of clients.
- Skill to investigate and interview alleged victims and perpetrators effectively.
- Ability to formulate and monitor work project guidelines or treatment plans.
- Excellent report writing skills.
- Sensitivity to families of diverse cultural/ethnic backgrounds.
- Ability to work with children with special needs and foster families prepared to accept them.
- Strong judgment in managing crisis situations.
- Ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
