Description

Under administrative direction, performs professional, prosecutorial legal services as assigned by the District Attorney (D.A.). Responsible for an ongoing caseload and other assignments which require constant interaction with clients, the public, other agencies and members of the legal professions. Work is assigned based upon the experience and professional competence of the attorney. Incumbents appointed at the lower levels of the class series may be promoted to higher levels within the series upon assumption of progressively responsible job assignments, satisfactory performance of such assignments, and having the corresponding amount of professional experience.

No experience is required at the Attorney I level. The Attorney II level requires a minimum of two (2) years of legal experience and the Attorney III requires a minimum of four (4) years of legal experience. Advancement within the series is dependent upon sustained meritorious performance. The current annual salary ranges are as follows:
ATTORNEY I - ANNUAL SALARY: $57,996 - $73,221
ATTORNEY II - ANNUAL SALARY: $78,685 - $90,857
ATTORNEY III - ANNUAL SALARY: $96,321 - $117,085
For those with long-term career aspirations as a prosecutor, there is also a Senior Attorney class which, again under administrative direction, provides the most difficult professional prosecutorial services as assigned by the D.A. The Senior class is distinguished from subordinate classes by: (1) difficulty of work assignments; (2) incumbents' demonstrated excellence of professional performance; and (3) appointment to, and removal from, the classification at the discretion of the department head.

The current annual salary range for those designated as Seniors is $93,273 - $133,497.

AGENCY/DEPARTMENT:
District Attorney

Attorneys are represented by the Criminal Justice Attorneys Association of Ventura County (CJAAVC) and are exempt from overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill present and future regular, temporary, fixed-term, intermittent, and extra-help vacancies within the District Attorney's Office. There are currently two vacancies.

COUNTY ORDINANCE PROHIBITS DEPUTY D.A.s FROM ENGAGING IN THE PRIVATE PRACTICE OF LAW.

Examples Of Duties
  • Interviews clients and witnesses and analyzes/evaluates evidence while preparing cases for trial under criminal law.
  • Appears on behalf of the People of the State of California at court hearings, makes appropriate motions and pleas, and takes other appropriate legal action.
  • Conducts trial prosecution by preparing strategies, ordering investigations and subpoenas, resolving legal issues through research, participating in jury selection, and presenting evidence and argument.
  • Negotiates disposition and modification of cases according to office policy.
  • Prepares reports, appeals, writs, and other legal documents.
  • Assigned complex cases which may include misdemeanors, felonies, environmental or consumer fraud, special investigations and/or pursuit of appellate issues. May also be assigned other tasks that require superior knowledge and skills at the department head's discretion.
  • May be assigned various supervisory and/or training responsibilities.
  • May make presentations to the public and community organizations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (KSAs)

Comprehensive knowledge of: rules of evidence, legal principles, criminal law and trial procedures;
State and Federal law pertaining to specific trial assignments; legal research methods; ethical responsibilities enunciated by the American Bar Association and California Bar Association.
