The Pacific West Region is recruiting for temporary seasonal positions not to exceed 1,039 hours of work in a service year. Employment dates vary by park site depending on funding, weather conditions, and visitation. Within regulatory limitations, the initial appointment length may be shortened or extended based on work availability and funding.

Duties:
- Perform maintenance and repairs on a wide variety of historic stone, concrete, and brick structures, including chimneys, guard‑walls, and culverts.
- Cut and shape stone and brick using hand and power tools such as hammers, drills, saws, feathering tools, and wedges.
- Perform repointing, grouting, and pargeting on historic and modern structures.
- Identify and replicate appropriate mortars using sand, cement, lime, and tinting agents to match the consistency and color of historic fabric.
- Perform maintenance and repairs to masonry structures and features of roads, trails, buildings, and backcountry structures.
At Mount Rainier: The primary purpose is maintenance, repair, and stabilization of historic stone and mortar structures related to park road assets and backcountry structures. This position may require frequent overnight backcountry stays, remote wilderness living at elevations up to 10,000 feet, and travel via maintained trail or unmaintained snowfield to high‑camp sites.
Physical DemandsIncumbent is frequently required to perform heavy lifting up to 80 pounds unassisted (occasionally over 100 pounds with help or equipment). Repairs are performed from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Incumbent must continuously stand, stoop, bend, and kneel while working, and be able to hike up to 15 miles a day carrying a backpack and work gear in the backcountry.
Working ConditionsWork occurs indoors and outdoors with exposure to abrasive chemicals, dust, grease, insects, cuts, scrapes, bruises, broken bones, electrical shock, and burns. Outdoor temperatures vary from extreme cold to intense heat. A valid driver's license is required.

- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Selectee required to participate in Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- Must operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of official duties; submit Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record, including certified driving records from all states.
- Wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.
- May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
- May be occasionally required to travel overnight away from home.
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old with high‑school graduation, vocational training, or equivalent. Certain school enrollment options apply.
- Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses not paid; relocation expenses are employee’s responsibility.
