Under the direct supervision of the Area Manager, the role of the Construction & Maintenance Supervisor is to supervise, coordinate, and lead the maintenance program within the San Juan Area including:
Moran State Park, Spencer Spit State Park, Obstruction Pass Lime Kiln Point State Park, Sucia Island, Patos Island, Matia Island, Stuart Island, Jones Island, Posey Island, Turn Island, Blind Island, James Island, Clark Island, Doe Island, Burrows Island, and Saddlebag Island. The C&M Supervisor provides guidance, coordination, and supervision of the trades and maintenance staff who perform maintenance duties on buildings, utility systems, water and wastewater systems, roads, trails, campsites, marine facilities, vessels, vehicles, and equipment resulting in the public having safe and functional facilities.
The position plays an important role of being the primary interface with the Region Maintenance Manager and the Maintenance Chief on state and region wide maintenance objectives and priorities.
This position is not eligible to telework, as physical on-site presence is required to perform essential functions.
The San Juan archipelago north of Puget Sound is like no other place on earth. The cluster of 400 islands and rocks in the Salish Sea is a world unto itself. Within this watery haven, 17 Washington State Parks welcome locals and visitors to moor, dock, hike, kayak, camp, sightsee and just be on their beautiful shores. Access to the San Juan Islands is only accessible by Washington State Ferries, commercial water taxi or private boat.
The position is located at Moran State Park and work-related travel between parks is by Ferry or Park boat. Interested candidates will need to be comfortable in boats on the water and working over water. A high level of coordination and planning is required due to the logistical nature and travel between park locations and work sites. The ideal candidate will have these important qualities:
Leadership, the ability to remain calm under changing conditions, and project management.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Serves as the Lead and Coordinator of Maintenance in a Park Area under the supervision of the Area Manager: Leads and directs the maintenance, repair, and operational development of the park areas and its facilities and equipment.
- Supervises Area Maintenance Staff: Schedules work priorities and shift coverage, mentors, recommends disciplinary and corrective action, performs hiring interviews, and develops work plans and evaluations. Recruits and hires trades and maintenance staff for the area.
- Project Coordination: Responsible for the coordination and completion of the preventative, deferred, routine, equipment, and emergency and unforeseen maintenance within the area. Performs repairs and maintenance work in carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, water and wastewater systems, and other equipment. Develops and controls park maintenance budget for all park area projects and repairs.
- Responsible for Administration.
- Responsible for Water and Wastewater System Operations.
- Coordinates the Equipment Operation and Maintenance within the Area: Conducts/provides equipment training for area staff who operate equipment.
Required Qualifications:
- Two (2) years of experience as a Construction & Maintenance Project Lead OR
- Four (4) years of experience as a Construction & Maintenance Project Specialist.
** OR - Eight (8) years of advanced level experience in two (2) or more trades to include: building maintenance, repair, remodeling, construction duties, and mechanical/machinery.**
AND
- Two (2) years of supervisor experience including directing the work of employees and providing employee performance feedback.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid unrestricted (except for corrective lenses) driver's license.
- Water Treatment Operators License must be obtained within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
- First Aid & CPR certification must be obtained within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
