Capital Power is dedicated to Powering Change by Changing Power. We are a growth‑oriented North American energy company headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta. This job is a Permanent Full‑Time position for a Plant Operator at our Frederickson Facility.
Responsibilities- Operate a 250MW Combined Cycle Power Plant from the control room and on‑site, on a 12‑hour rotating shift.
- Ensure safe and efficient operation of plant equipment, including gas turbines, steam turbine, generators, heat recovery steam generators, emissions monitoring systems, electrical systems, compressors, motors, heaters, pumps, and auxiliary equipment.
- Monitor equipment parameters (temperature, pressure, levels, vibration, operating hours, water chemistry); review operator rounds to verify operating conditions and trends.
- Adjust water chemistry to maintain control ranges by managing chemical feed and/or blowdown rates.
- Perform general housekeeping and continuous improvement of the facility’s appearance.
- Issue permits (lock‑out/tag‑out, confined space, hot work) and authorize work.
- Use Maximo to enter service requests and document preventive maintenance.
- Communicate plant conditions, especially unusual or abnormal, to the Operations & Maintenance Manager.
- Assist with development of operational procedures and programs.
- Operate heavy equipment such as a man‑lift and forklift as required.
- Assist with junior operator training.
- Adhere to all safety and environmental rules and regulations.
- Assist with root‑cause analysis of failures.
- High School Diploma required; technical training preferred.
- Desired experience as an operator in a power plant, particularly a combined‑cycle plant.
- Experience with water‑chemistry control, water‑treatment facility operations, and chemical handling.
- Knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed‑system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and inspection/recording of plant parameters.
- Familiarity with piping and instrument schematics and process control.
- Experience with GE units and General Electric units.
- Proficiency with Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Mark VIe control systems.
- Computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills at an expert level for gas‑power plant issues.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Heavy industrial facility, safety‑sensitive location.
- Physical mobility required (lifting, climbing) and use of PPE.
- Rotating shift work and outdoor operations.
- Pay range: $49.00 to $58.00 per hour.
- Health care, retirement, paid time off, and annual bonus.
- Pre‑employment drug test clearance required.
- Legal eligibility to work in the United States required.
