Burloak Technologies works with the most innovative companies in the space, aerospace, automotive and industrial markets to rapidly transition their most challenging part designs to be additively manufactured at scale.
Position Summary:The Deburring Technician is responsible for safely and efficiently performing deburring, support removal, surface finishing, and post-processing activities on additively manufactured metal components to ensure they meet engineering specifications and quality standards. Working with a variety of hand tools, mechanical finishing equipment, and precision measuring instruments, this role inspects components for dimensional accuracy and surface quality while maintaining detailed production documentation.
The Deburring Technician collaborates closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, CNC Machining, and Quality teams to support efficient production flow, identify process improvements, and ensure parts are ready for the next stage of manufacturing. This role plays a critical part in delivering high-quality components for the aerospace, space, automotive, and industrial sectors while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Deburring and Post-Processing
- Utilize hand tools including files, grinders, and deburring knives to remove burrs and sharp edges from additively manufactured metal components in materials such as aluminum, titanium, steel, and nickel-based alloys.
- Operate mechanical deburring equipment including blasters, vibratory finishers, and grinding machines to smooth and polish component surfaces to required specifications.
- Remove support structures from additively manufactured parts in accordance with work instructions and engineering requirements, ensuring components are not damaged during the process.
- Select and apply appropriate deburring techniques based on part geometry, material type, and specified surface finish requirements.
- Conduct dimensional inspections using calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify that parts meet specified tolerances following deburring and post-processing.
- Perform visual inspections to identify burrs, sharp edges, surface defects, and non-conformances using magnifying tools or microscopes as required.
- Ensure all deburring processes meet the company’s quality standards and specifications prior to releasing parts for the next stage of production.
- Identify and elevate non-conformances or quality concerns to the quality control team in a timely and accurate manner.
- Accurately document all deburring activities, inspection results, and corrective actions in accordance with company guidelines and quality requirements.
- Maintain detailed records of deburring processes, including methods used, tools applied, and any part-specific observations or corrective actions taken.
- Communicate effectively with quality control and production teams to provide timely status updates on parts and report any issues encountered during processing.
- Regularly clean and maintain deburring tools and equipment to ensure optimal performance, accuracy, and longevity.
- Identify and report equipment performance issues or maintenance needs promptly to prevent disruptions to production output.
- Organize and maintain a clean, orderly workspace that reflects the expectations of an advanced manufacturing operation.
- Adhere to all workplace safety protocols at all times, including the proper use of personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection.
- Follow all company policies and procedures, including attendance, workplace behaviour, and operational protocols.
- Identify potential safety hazards and report concerns promptly to supervisors to maintain a safe working environment for all team members.
- Work closely with CNC machinists, 3D printing technicians, and quality control inspectors to ensure seamless production workflow and consistently high-quality output.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to burrs, surface finishes, and post-processing challenges.
- Identify and suggest improvements to deburring processes to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety across the production area.
- Contribute positively to a collaborative team environment by sharing observations, supporting colleagues, and maintaining a respectful and professional attitude on the shop floor.
