Overview

Lummi Island Heritage Trust (LIHT) is an accredited, community-based nonprofit land trust with the mission to create a legacy of abundant open space, native habitat, and natural resources on Lummi Island by inspiring people to protect and care for the island’s farms, forests, wetlands, and shorelines forever. LIHT is guided by science and integrity in preserving, nurturing, and restoring the island’s natural systems, honoring its cultural heritage, and cultivating community resilience.

Position

Summary

The Summer Steward is a skilled, flexible, goal-driven, organized, and enthusiastic person who will assist the Stewardship Manager in land management activities for LIHT. This position will report directly to the Stewardship Manager and will work closely with other staff in a fast-paced, collegial, and community-centric environment. The Summer Steward will be responsible for creating a final project that explores a topic of interest related to conservation and land management.

They will work closely with the Stewardship Manager to plan and execute their final project.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist in general stewardship activities, including invasive species management, trail maintenance, and kiosk upkeep
  • Conduct field surveys about invasive species
  • Assist in the annual monitoring of LIHT conservation easement properties
  • Answer and direct incoming calls when necessary
  • Greet, educate, and assist visitors when necessary
Qualifications
  • Passion for conservation, land management, restoration, and/or environmental advocacy
  • Must be a senior in their undergraduate program or have graduated with a bachelor’s degree within the last year
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Knowledge of GIS and GPS applications preferred (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Survey
    123)
  • Experience with power tools (String trimmers, Chainsaws, Mowers, etc.)
  • Knowledge of PNW and Salish Sea ecosystems
  • Must live within a commutable distance to Lummi Island
Physical and Environmental Requirements
  • Able to hike and traverse for an extended period, often through rugged off-trail terrain and inclement weather.
  • Capable of lifting to 35 pounds and the ability to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Able to stand and sit for extended periods.

Valid driver’s license and may require the use of a personal vehicle.
