Youth Alliance Overview

We are Washington’s only truly youth-led 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and State PAC that builds authentic statewide youth power by transforming young people's stories and lived experiences into action, creating youth-led chapters that educate, advocate, and organize for mental health support, gun violence prevention, access to a healthier democracy, and other systemic changes young people need.

We envision a world where Washington is designed to serve the needs of and address problems specific to young people, and where young people are equipped with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to shape systems so it continues to address issues that impact young people.

What do we define as youth-led?

We define youth-led as having young people ages 13-24, but particularly those not in College, at the center of everything we are doing and hope to do. Our boards are 85% under the age of 24 with 33.3% being under the age of 18 and from local chapters.

Overview

The Eastern Washington Organizer is WYA's on-the-ground presence in Eastern Washington. You'll coach youth chapter leaders in the fundamentals of organizing such as one-on-ones, power-mapping, running actions, and support chapters as they recruit, build leadership teams, and grow their base. This is an in-person role: you'll show up for chapter meetings, trainings, and activations across the region, adapt WYA's organizing model to what each chapter needs, and set regional goals alongside the Executive Director and Program Director.

The goal isn't to organize for young people, it's to teach the skills and be accountable to the chapters in their endeavors, providing support to their efforts in building power across Washington.

Position Responsibilities Chapter Coaching and Base Building
  • Provide organizing coaching to chapter leaders and members in your region, meeting each chapter where it is
  • Support existing chapters in recruiting, retaining, and developing members so their base grows
  • Model and run one-on-one meetings, and help chapter leaders keep a steady 1:1 rhythm
  • Help each chapter build a leadership team of three to five people with clear roles, and make sure each role has someone being trained to take it over
  • Teach WYA's core organizing skills (self-interest, issue-cutting, TIERS campaigns, power-mapping, propositions, running an action, and working through conflict), then hand them off so members can teach each other
Regional Goal-Setting and Collaboration
  • Set and track goals for your region with the Executive Director and Program Director
  • Coordinate with the Program Director on chapter health and on the broader organizing plan
  • Connect your chapters to statewide efforts with our Advocacy and Political Director, Communications Manager, and Chief of Staff.
In-Person Organizing and Adaptation
  • Show up in person for chapter meetings, trainings, and actions (at least 2 activations per week)
  • Adapt WYA's organizing model to what each chapter wants and needs on the ground
  • Help chapters run local events and take their next action, scaled to the people and energy in the room
Measuring and Evaluating for the Future
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with youth, partners, and funders in your region
  • Track chapter health and the progress of your region's base
  • Assist the Program Director with grant and reporting needs as they relate to your region
  • Contribute to our internal program evaluation and progress rubrics

Note that this is meant to be a sample of position responsibilities and is not fully encompassing. Washington Youth Alliance reserves the right to modify these responsibilities at any time.
