JOB DESCRIPTION OF THE TEACHER

REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Responsibilities
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Management of Instructional Time

    The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson; gets the class started quickly and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.

  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Management of Student Behavior

    Established a set of rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, verbal participation, talk, and student movement; monitors behavior during whole‑class, small group, and seat‑work activities and during transitions; stops inappropriate behavior promptly while maintaining student dignity.

  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Instructional Presentation

    Begins lessons with a review of previous materials, introduces objectives, speaks fluently and precisely, presents concepts with relevant examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks with a high success rate, asks appropriate questions, maintains brisk pacing, and summarizes main points at the end of the lesson.

  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance

    Maintains clear work standards and due dates; circulates during class to check all students’ performance; uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress; poses questions clearly and one at a time.

  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Instructional Feedback

    Provides feedback on correctness of in‑class work, encourages growth, gives prompt feedback on assigned out‑of‑class work, affirms correct responses, and provides sustaining feedback after incorrect responses.

  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Facilitating Instruction

    Has an instructional plan compatible with school and systemwide curricular goals; uses diagnostic information to develop/adjust objectives and tasks; maintains accurate records; aligns objectives, strategies, and assessment; utilizes available resources to support the instructional program.

  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Interacting Within the Educational Environment

    Treats all students fairly; interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.

  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Performing Non‑Instructional Duties

    Carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to school laws and policies, follows a professional development plan, and demonstrates evidence of growth.

  • ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications
  • Degree in education or a related area qualifying for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
  • Physical requirements consistent with Light Work: use classroom tools, lift/carry objects, stand/walk for long periods.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, interpersonal communication, language, intelligence, verbal and numerical aptitude, spatial and motor coordination, manual dexterity, color discrimination, interpersonal temperament, and physical communication.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities: monitor safety, motivate students, maintain clean environment, perform clerical duties, enforce discipline, operate office machines, maintain files, understand instructions, and establish working relationships.

Salary: $4,100 Per Month
