The teacher plans, organizes, and presents instruction in a manner that supports student learning, behavioral management, and classroom safety. The role requires coordination with teacher assistants and collaboration with staff, parents, and community members.
Major Functions- Management of Instructional Time – Prepare materials and equipment prior to each lesson, start class promptly and maintain high student time‑on‑task.
- Management of Student Behavior – Establish rules and procedures for classroom conduct, monitor behavior during all instructional and non‑instructional activities, and address inappropriate behavior consistently while maintaining student dignity.
- Instructional Presentation – Review prior work, present new concepts using clear language and demonstrations, ask purposeful questions, pace lessons effectively, facilitate smooth transitions, and summarize key points.
- Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance – Set and enforce clear work standards, circulate during class to assess performance, use oral and written assessments, and pose questions one at a time.
- Instructional Feedback – Provide immediate, constructive feedback on in‑class and out‑of‑class work, reinforcing correct responses and guiding learning after errors.
- Facilitating Instruction – Develop instructional plans aligned with school and state curriculum goals, analyze diagnostic data to adjust objectives, maintain accurate performance records, and use available resources to support instruction.
- Interacting Within the Educational Environment – Treat all students fairly, collaborate effectively with co‑workers, parents, and community.
- Performing Non‑Instructional Duties – Complete tasks as assigned, adhere to policies and regulations, and engage in professional development.
Perform other related work as required.
Minimum Training and ExperienceDegree in education or related field eligible for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required- Physical Requirements – Ability to use classroom equipment, lift, carry, and move objects with minimal force; consistent with Light Work demands.
- Data Conception – Ability to analyze and judge data characteristics.
- Interpersonal Communication – Deliver and receive oral/written instructions; communicate with various professional terms.
- Language Ability – Read, write, and prepare correspondence and instructional materials in prescribed format.
- Intelligence – Apply logical or scientific reasoning to problem definition and solution.
- Verbal Aptitude – Present information clearly, follow instructions across specialized terminology.
- Numerical Aptitude – Use mathematical formulas, basic arithmetic, decimals, percentages, and simple statistics.
- Form/Spatial Aptitude – Inspect objects for proper dimensions.
- Motor Coordination – Coordinate hand and eye movements when using office equipment.
- Manual Dexterity – Handle tools and equipment with adequate hand, eye, and foot coordination.
- Color Discrimination – Distinguish between colors and shades.
- Interpersonal Temperament – Adapt to stressful or emergency situations.
- Physical Communication – Speak and hear clearly, use telephone communication.
- Monitor safety and well‑being of students, including inclusive learners.
- Motivate students and maintain a clean, orderly classroom.
- Perform general clerical duties and manage basic file records.
- Follow oral and written instructions, and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
