Job DescriptionThe Person al Care Assistant (PCA) works one‑on‑one with an Exceptional Children student daily, providing mobility assistance, basic care, behavioral support and clerical tasks. The PCA collaborates with staff to administer medication, therapy and other treatments, maintains student confidentiality, and performs daily data collection. The position requires a CDL or willingness to obtain one shortly after employment.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities- Accompany the student throughout the school day providing constant observation, intervention and assistance to maintain safety and access to curriculum.
- Assist with mobility, motor skills, behavioral management and any necessary protective strategies.
- Collaborate with supervising teacher to administer and monitor medication, therapy and special treatments.
- Perform daily data collection and maintain records of student progress.
- Carry out clerical duties, keep classroom environment clean and orderly, and meet required training sessions.
- Maintain student confidentiality at all times.
- Execute additional job functions as directed by the Exceptional Children’s Department.
High school diploma plus experience working with physically and/or behaviorally disabled children, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Special RequirementsMust participate in trainings determined by Guilford County Schools Exceptional Children Services.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required- Physical: Ability to use equipment and lift up to 80 pounds occasionally and up to 30 pounds frequently; meet medium work physical demands.
- Data: Compare and judge observable data characteristics.
- Interpersonal Communication: Convey information, receive instructions.
- Language: Read and prepare correspondence and reports.
- Verbal: Deliver information and follow instructions; communicate in standard English.
- Numerical: Use basic math formulas, addition, subtraction, decimals and percentages.
- Motor Coordination and Manual Dexterity: Coordinate hands and eyes, handle office equipment.
- Color Discrimination: Differentiate colors and shades.
- Adaptable to stress and communicate via telephone.
Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of classroom routines, student handbook rules, and emergency procedures.
- Knowledge of methods for adapting instruction and equipment for students with special needs.
- Ability to monitor safety and wellbeing of students, motivate them, and maintain clean order.
- Perform general clerical duties, maintain files and records, and understand written instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
