Job Description of the TeacherReports To: Chief of Student Services
Supervis: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
Duties and Responsibilities- Management of Instructional Time
The teacher prepares materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson at the start of the instructional activity; gets the class started quickly; ensures students are on task at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
- Management of Student Behavior
The teacher establishes rules and procedures that govern routine administrative matters, student verbal participation, talk, and movement; monitors behavior during whole‑class, small group, and seat work activities; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining student dignity.
- Instructional Presentation
The teacher begins the lesson with a review of previous materials, introduces the lesson and specific learning objectives, speaks fluently and precisely, presents the lesson using concepts and language understandable to the students, provides relevant examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks with a high success rate, asks appropriate questions, maintains a brisk pace, and summarizes the main points at the end.
- Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
The teacher maintains clear, firm work standards and due dates, circulates during class work to check performance, uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress, and poses questions clearly and one at a time.
- Instructional Feedback
The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work to encourage growth, offers prompt feedback on out‑of‑class assignments, affirms correct responses, and gives sustaining feedback after incorrect or no responses through probing, repetition, clues, or additional time.
- Facilitating Instruction
The teacher develops an instructional plan compatible with school and systemwide goals, uses diagnostic information to revise objectives and tasks, maintains accurate records, aligns objectives with learning strategies and assessments, and uses available resources to support instruction.
- Interacting Within the Educational Environment
The teacher treats all students fairly and equitably, and interacts effectively with students, coworkers, parents, and community members.
- Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws and policies, follows a professional development plan, and demonstrates growth.
Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Training and ExperienceDegree in education or a related field that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards RequiredPhysical Requirements: Must use a variety of classroom equipment, exert minimal force to lift or move objects, and maintain light‑work requirements.
Data Conception: Ability to compare, judge, and interpret functional characteristics of data or people.
Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal effectively, receive instructions, and exchange information.
Language Ability: Ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, and instructional materials in prescribed format.

- Perform general clerical duties, operate office machines, and maintain files.
- Follow oral and written instructions and establish effective relationships.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
