Summary

Perform semi-skilled heavy-duty electrical work to install, maintain and repair electrical distribution, transmission and underground systems serving the City of Washington. Responsible for proving semi-skilled electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

NOTE:

  • Provides electrical line technician work in the installation, maintenance and repair of the City’s electrical distribution and transmission systems.
  • Installs and maintains streetlights, floodlights and associated equipment in public areas; installs underground lines and associated equipment.
  • Troubleshoots work to locate sources causing power failure; makes defined repairs and restores electrical service.
  • Uses hot sticks when working with live-lines on energized high-voltage electric power lines; tests voltage, tightens nuts and bolts, applies tie wires, opens and closes switches, replaces fuses, lays insulating sleeves on wires and performs various tasks without exposing work crew to electric shock.
  • Operates digger derrick, backhoe and other construction equipment; operates special purpose line trucks and attached equipment; checks equipment daily to ensure they are operational and equipped to provide service.
  • Assists with relocating other utilities such as cable, telephone, and fiber optic lines when setting new poles for the City.
  • Clears rights-of-way by cutting/trimming trees and tree limbs; operates machine to grind limbs.
  • Participates in NCAMES Rodeo annually
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Line School Certificate or equivalent work experience

Special Requirements
  • Valid N.C. CDL-A driver's license and acceptable driving record (must possess at least CDL-A permit and obtain license within 6 months of hire date)
  • Ability to climb a pole
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Some knowledge of electrical utility work, equipment and materials.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform tasks safely, quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public.
  • Ability to work in uncomfortable positions and under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate a line truck and bucket truck.
  • Spice primary and secondary wire both overhead and underground
  • Make up transformers both overhead and underground
  • Frame poles per specifications
  • Ability to handle secondary voltage up to 500 volts
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Physical Requirements

This is heavy work requiring exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally (up to 33% of the time) maximum pulling force of 90 lbs. occasionally and 70lbs maximum pushing force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift and move objects; the physical requirements include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling and repetitive motion.

Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities.

Working

Conditions

Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment with constant exposure to varying weather conditions, high and low temperatures, electrical hazards, confined spaces, dirt, dust and fumes, and around hazardous machinery. Ability to be on-call and work overtime (including weekends and holidays) required to meet operational needs as required by the City and travel to various locations as required. Required to work during inclement weather.
