Job DescriptionTHIS IS A LONG TERM SUBSTITUTE POSITION DURING THE 26-27 SCHOOL YEAR FROM AUGUST 31ST UNTIL DECEMBER 18, 2026.
NOTE: This position is open to qualified CERSD applicants from July 1 - July 8, 2026. Applications received from out of district applicants will not be considered until July 9, 2026. Applications will be reviewed as they are submitted. The position is open until filled.
Job Summary: The Health Room Assistant supports the elementary and middle school by providing basic health services to students and staff under the direction and supervision of a licensed nurse. This position helps maintain a safe, healthy school environment by assisting with first aid, medication administration, health documentation, and clerical tasks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
- Administers first aid, medication and specialized medical treatment for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children.
- Assess situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements.
- Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers and/or other agencies for the purpose of promoting needed treatment, securing information and complying with legal requirements.
- Assists with programs (i.e. health screening, education, immunizations, etc.) for the purpose of complying with the law.
- Develops health care plans for the purpose of addressing students' health needs and implementing health care directions from parents and/or physicians.
- Maintains health care plans, medical emergency cards, records (mandated screening, updated physical problems list) for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards.
- Prepares summary documentation (student health history, current health status, immunization status) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
- Provides input on district health services for the purpose of planning and budgeting.
- Provides training on various health related subjects (disaster preparedness, child abuse, health education) for the purpose of acting as a resource to students, teachers, and other school personnel on such issues.
- Refers students requiring further medical attention for the purpose of providing needed medical/dental treatment.
- Reports incidents (suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) for the purpose of maintaining students personal safety, a positive learning environment, and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.
- Reports students with contagious diseases to local public health authorities for the purpose of minimizing infection and complying with the law.
- Must have regular and consistent attendance.
- Follow universal precautions and district safety protocols in all interactions.
- Perform clerical duties such as data entry, filing, and preparing health notices.
- Communicate effectively and compassionately with students, families, and staff.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Prior experience in healthcare, childcare, or school setting preferred.
- Basic first aid and CPR certification required (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
- Knowledge of basic health care practices and emergency procedures.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle medical emergencies appropriately.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in using computers and health record software (training provided).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
