Retail Food Safety Manager, NA Food Safety Operations Team

Are you passionate about keeping food safe at scale? As a Food Safety Manager on Amazon's North America Food Safety Operations Team, you'll be the frontline guardian of food safety across our entire fulfillment network. From investigating overnight incidents to leading cross‑functional audits, you'll drive compliance programs spanning temperature controls, HACCP, sanitation, and pest management. Leveraging data and technology, you’ll identify trends, close gaps, and automate processes—ensuring millions of customers receive safe products daily.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide governance and continuous improvement in complex food safety programs related to temperature controls, food safety audits, learning and development, HACCP, sanitation, and pest control across all Amazon businesses.
  • Implement, train, and validate Food Safety Operations programs and processes to drive food safety execution at the retail level.
  • Leverage technology to automate and manage compliance processes.
  • Analyze data to identify compliance trends and update policies and procedures to close operational food safety gaps.
  • Create and monitor business metrics to track compliance and process effectiveness.
  • Apply regulatory frameworks, including the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), and FDA guidance, to align audit processes and corrective actions with current standards.
  • Investigate and analyze customer complaints and trending data related to food safety, ensuring thorough documentation, timely resolution, and identification of systemic issues for continuous improvement.
A Day in the Life

Start the day reviewing overnight incidents and monitoring KPI dashboards before joining the daily food safety status call. Respond to site managers’ questions and document corrective actions in the morning. In the afternoon, lead cross‑functional incident analyses, conduct site audits, update protocols, and train teams via video conference. When critical incidents arise, coordinate immediate containment and stakeholder communication. The day ends with documentation updates and ensuring overnight teams have support, with on‑call availability for critical issues.

the Team

The North American Food Safety Team ensures all Amazon Fulfillment sites meet food safety criteria and regulatory requirements. Working with diverse internal stakeholders, the team implements comprehensive policies and procedures across the fulfillment network and translates food safety initiatives into actionable guidelines for seamless adoption.

Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of managing food safety and quality in a large‑scale retail or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience leveraging technology to drive process improvements.
  • Experience in project or program management and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to senior leadership.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Travel up to 80% of the time.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or a related field.
  • Experience applying Food Code requirements across local, state, and federal food regulations.
  • Experience with risk assessment in the regular course of duties.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in online retail.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication.
  • 3+ years of project management experience.
  • Data‑driven decision making using metrics to evaluate outcomes.
  • Influencing multiple stakeholders and leading cross‑functional teams across geographies and business units.
  • Experience creating and implementing large‑scale organizational programs.
  • Master’s degree in Food Science or a related field.

  • Competitive base salary range: $74,200 – $129,800 USD annually (location dependent).
