SUMM.ARY:
Under the guidance and coordination of the Marine Ecologist:
Organize, oversee, and implement removal trapping, research, and monitoring of European green crab on the Makah Reservation and within the Makah Usual and Accustomed (U&A) Fishing Area; supervise and provide training to seasonal staff, volunteers, or interns.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES including the following:

The employee may work independently or as part of a team to:

Organize, oversee, and implement removal trapping of European green crab on the Makah Reservation and within the Makah U&A. Trapping is expected to take place weekly or bi-weekly from approximately April through September and as feasible (weather and tide dependent) from October through March. Trapping will be conducted by land or kayak in estuarine, intertidal, and nearshore waters as well as by research vessel in nearshore coastal waters.

Lead research and monitoring activities on European green crab and their impacts on native species including but not limited to deploying underwater cameras via kayak, mark-recapture studies, mapping marine and estuarine species/habitats of interest, larval crab monitoring, etc.

Collaborate with contractors and Makah fishers to monitor European green crab in nearshore and coastal marine waters.

Manage day-to-day operations of the Makah Green Crab trapping program including developing field schedules, managing and maintaining supplies and equipment, making purchase requisitions, and other daily workflow. Supervise and provide training to technicians, seasonal staff, volunteers, or interns, including providing clear instruction and feedback on field and data collection protocols.

Perform data error checking/validation of field data into standard programs such as MS

Excel, MS Access (or other database program). Perform statistical analysis, graphing,

and report writing to present field data. Use mapping programs such as Arc Map, Arc Pro, or QGIS to map trap effort, catch, and analyze spatial patterns in catch.

Independently or in collaboration with the Marine Ecologist, prepare and submit grant reports, technical reports, and manuscripts for peer-review publication.

Independently or in collaboration with the Marine Ecologist, prepare and submit grant applications to fund European green crab projects on behalf of the Makah Tribe.

Participate in state and regional European green crab management meetings.

Track the development of database, electronic data collection, and other strategies associated with improved data collection and analysis.

Conduct outreach and education including but not limited to giving presentations to elementary, middle, or high school students or the general public and coordinating lab or field activities for high school or college age interns.

Carries out general supervisory responsibilities for technicians, seasonal staff, volunteers, and interns in accordance with organizational policies, program policies and applicable laws and under the direction of the Marine Ecologist with regard to the day-to-day work assignments. The Marine Ecologist has the ultimate authority in regard to personnel management and that may include but not be limited to rewarding and disciplining employees;

resolution to complaints and/or problems; the Marine Ecologist may take recommendation(s) from the Green Crab Biologist.

Bachelor's Degree or 4 years of relevant experience in a science field is REQUIRED.

Prior experience with field data collection and survey techniques in intertidal, coastal, and estuarine environments is REQUIRED.

Prior experience on small boats in nearshore and coastal settings is REQUIRED.

Prior experience with removal of European green crab or other invasive species removal and management is PREFERRED.

Experience and knowledge using computer programs including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, database programs, and statistical programs is REQUIRED.

Experience and knowledge using Arc Map/ ArcGIS Pro/ QGIS or other mapping programs in the office and/ or field is PREFERRED.
