Location: Rochester
Salish Prairie Oak Biologist – Fish & Wildlife Biologist 1 – Full‑Time/Permanent – Rochester, Washington – Thurston County – Wildlife Program – Lands Division
Responsibilities- Coordinate and implement habitat management actions, working with the Wildlife Area Manager to develop and execute work plans.
- Identify and secure resource needs (equipment, materials, supplies, personnel) for habitat actions.
- Operate brush cutters, chainsaws, tractors, and tractor‑mounted implements to mechanically treat vegetation.
- Apply herbicides using backpack, UTV, and tractor sprayers for vegetation control.
- Sow native plant material and plant native plugs with seeding equipment and hand‑held augers.
- Prepare units and participate in controlled burn operations and post‑burn patrols, including ignition and slash pile management.
- Collect, maintain, and interpret geospatial and field data related to habitat management and monitoring.
- Assist with data collection method development and follow scientific protocols.
- Conduct scheduled equipment maintenance and perform light repairs.
- Support facility maintenance, repair, and construction as needed (fencing, signage, road maintenance).
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, environmental science, or a related field.
- Experience using agricultural practices and equipment for habitat management (mechanical or chemical treatments).
- Knowledge of scientific principles and standard field methods of biological survey.
- Ability to identify wildlife and plant species and discern biological and physical features.
- Interpret data to guide habitat management decisions.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Preferred: Experience implementing work plans and coordinating resources.
- Data collection and interpretation to assess habitat management efficacy.
- Knowledge of South Salish prairie and oak systems species.
- Experience working with threatened or endangered species and their habitats.
- Participation in prescribed fire operations.
- Familiarity with GIS, GPS, and Microsoft Office.
- Experience operating and maintaining small, large, and heavy equipment and tools.
- Basic carpentry, mechanical, and facility repair skills.
- Understanding of basic statistical procedures and study design.
