Fish Biologist III

Location Peshastin

The Biologist III will be responsible for professional/technical/scientific fisheries biologist work involved with Upper Columbia Production Projects. The Biologist III will oversee hatchery evaluation for the Mid-Columbia Coho Program. The Biologist III will oversee operations of field activities related to Coho monitoring and evaluation (M&E), as well as prepare monthly and annual reports related to Coho M&E. Assist in developing and altering the master plan pertaining to Mid-Columbia Coho reintroduction.

The Biologist III will also oversee operation of rotary smolt traps for ESA-listed Chinook and Steelhead, as well as prepare monthly and annual smolt trap reports. The Biologist III will also be expected to represent Yakama Nation on various technical committees and contribute to building and managing various project budgets. Present research at professional conferences, to funding sources, and to the community.

of Work Performed:
  • Oversee operation of hatchery Coho monitoring and evaluation.
  • Oversee operation of rotary smolt traps.
  • Analyze data and prepare monthly and annual reports.
  • Write work statements, budgets, and proposals for BPA and other funding agencies.
  • Works with acting agencies to secure various environmental compliance permits (ESA, WDFW, Chelan County, etc).
  • Develop and edit master plan relating to Mid-Columbia Coho restoration.
  • Present results in both written and oral formats to various committees and forums.
  • Coordinate project activities with other agencies and landowners.
  • Participate as YN representative on various technical working groups.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the life histories and ecology of Columbia Basin anadromous fish stocks.
  • Knowledge of anadromous fish habitat and populations sampling techniques (e.g. sampling protocols, screw trapping, spawning ground surveys, electroshocking etc.).
  • Knowledge of juvenile salmonid enumeration and estimation.
  • Knowledge of the funding and contracting policies and procedures of external funding agencies.
  • Ability to demonstrate the capacity to manage all facets of field-based restoration, research and monitoring projects.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate a large staff comprised of professionals and technicians.
  • Ability to implement and coordinate a diverse array of field activities.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations and educational seminars to funding entities, professional organizations, and public schools
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Fisheries Science or related field.
  • Three(3) years of experience at Biologist II level or equivalent.
  • Required to pass pre-employment drug test.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Tribal Driver Permit with
  • Defensive Driving Course certificate (to be updated every 2 years).
Preferred Requirements:
  • Master of Science degree in Fisheries Science or related field may substitute for up to two years of experience.
  • Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
