Job Summary

The Construction Trades Teacher will plan, organize, and implement a comprehensive Construction Trades program for high school students. Instruction will focus on residential and commercial construction fundamentals, including carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, construction safety, blueprint reading, and project management. The teacher will provide hands-on, project-based learning experiences that prepare students for careers, apprenticeships, technical training, and postsecondary education within the skilled trades industry.

The program will emphasize industry standards, workplace safety, employability skills, problem-solving, teamwork, and real-world application of construction concepts. Students will develop technical skills through the design, construction, installation, and maintenance of projects while learning the challenges and responsibilities associated with construction trades and project management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Teach Construction Trades courses for high school students, including instruction in carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, construction technology, and related skilled trades.

* Develop and deliver project-based learning experiences that incorporate collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking, and real-world construction applications.

* Provide hands-on instruction in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, machinery, and construction equipment.

* Teach construction safety practices, including OSHA standards, workplace safety procedures, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

* Instruct students in blueprint reading, construction mathematics, estimating, measurement, material selection, and project planning.

* Lead and assist in the delivery of lab-based construction trades instruction while establishing an environment conducive to skill development, creativity, teamwork, and professional conduct.

* Facilitate student learning through the construction, installation, troubleshooting, and repair of projects representative of industry practices.

* Develop partnerships with local industry, apprenticeship programs, unions, and community organizations to support student learning and career exploration.

* Oversee equipment, tool inventory, consumable supplies, shop maintenance, and safety inspections for the construction trades laboratory.

* Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment that reflects industry expectations and best practices.

* Support students in obtaining industry-recognized certifications and credentials when appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Ability to connect with students and foster enthusiasm for construction trades, skilled careers, and hands-on learning.

* Strong knowledge of residential and commercial construction practices, including carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.

* Knowledge of construction safety procedures, OSHA standards, and risk management practices.

* Understanding of construction project management principles, including planning, scheduling, estimating, and resource management.

* Ability to teach and demonstrate proper use of hand tools, power tools, stationary equipment, and construction technology.

* Knowledge of blueprint reading, construction mathematics, building materials, and industry standards.

* Ability to create an engaging and positive learning environment that promotes teamwork, professionalism, and career readiness.

* Strong organizational, project management, and time management skills.

* Working knowledge of Google Workspace, Google Classroom, and other instructional technologies.

* Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.

* Passion for construction, craftsmanship, and workforce development.

Preferred Qualifications

* Washington State certification in Industrial Arts, Technology Education, Construction Trades, or a related Career and Technical Education field.

* Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Construction Technology, Industrial Technology, Career and Technical Education, Engineering Technology, Education, or a related field.

* Experience in residential or commercial construction, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or related skilled trades.

* Experience creating engaging, hands-on learning environments for students.

* Experience teaching in formal or informal educational settings.

* Experience developing curriculum aligned with industry standards and workforce needs.

* Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

* Experience working with apprenticeship programs, labor organizations, contractors, or industry partners.

Preferred Professional Experience

* Teaching experience in Construction Trades, Industrial Arts, Technology Education, or Career and Technical Education programs.
