Working hours may include weekends, holidays, and extended hours beyond a regular 40‑hour work week.
Basic FunctionsThe Heavy Construction Equipment Operator is skilled in the maintenance, construction and repair of roadways, including land contouring. Responsibilities include operating various heavy equipment such as motor‑grade machinery, bulldozers, front‑end loaders, scrapers, 10‑CY dump trucks, snow plows, sander trucks, pneumatic and steel drum rollers, backhoes, excavators, and other equipment as needed; performing grading and contouring of slopes to match survey stakes;
filling, leveling, and breaking hard ground and surfaces; excavating soil; back filling ditches; analyzing contours, layouts, and routes; and training and observing safe work habits.

- Four years of experience in construction, repair, and/or maintenance of public infrastructure (preferred)
- Valid ClassA driver’s license; eligible for Tribes’ vehicle insurance
- CPR/1st‑Aid card or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
- Knowledge of reservation districts, area roads, heavy equipment operation, maintenance and repair of power‑driven equipment, new methods and techniques, workplace safety, manual and electronic operations, construction methods, and equipment characteristics
- Ability to perform a variety of labor in heavy equipment operation, construction, and repair; assist or participate with related specialists
- Strong math skills for recording distances, volumes, and fees; human relation skills; ability to work as a team member and demonstrate courtesy to customers
- Physical ability to stand, walk up to 400 yards, lift, carry, and move light‑to‑heavy weights up to 75lb; manipulate equipment; climb ladders, stoop, kneel, and crouch as required
- Ability to work in extreme temperatures and during non‑standard hours (weekends, holidays, extended hours)
- Strong verbal and written communication, decision‑making, problem‑solving, and independent work skills with minimal supervision
The role requires cardiovascular endurance, strength and stamina to perform strenuous activities, load up to 75lb regularly, and operate heavy equipment safely.
