Location: Joint Base Lewis McChord
Provides services in support of advocacy, intervention, prevention, education, and training to address domestic violence under the Army’s Family Advocacy Program (FAP). This position supports the Army’s Victim Advocacy Program (VAP), which offers comprehensive services 24hours a day, 7 days per week, to assist and advocate for victims of domestic abuse and to facilitate a victim’s transition to community resources. The victim advocate serves Soldiers and Army families on and off the installation in accordance with program protocol.
Responsibilities- Provide crisis intervention and comprehensive services, including emotional support, transportation arrangement, accompaniment to medical, legal, or law‑enforcement appointments, and assistance with protective orders, emergency food, shelter, and benefit information.
- Advocate for victims’ expressed needs and coordinate with intervening agencies; assess imminent health and safety risks and make appropriate referrals.
- Perform initial screening, non‑clinical risk and lethality assessment, and safety planning; develop safety plans and provide prevention awareness and education.
- Act as liaison with the Family Advocacy Program Manager (FAPM) to ensure coordinated community responses to domestic abuse victims, family members, soldiers, and civilians authorized to receive services at a Military Treatment Facility.
- Facilitate warm hand‑offs to community resources for victims ineligible for Military Treatment Facility services; provide information on victim rights, available services, and resources on and off the installation.
- Respond to victim contacts within 20 minutes telephonically or within 60 minutes face‑to‑face when requested; explain FAP disclosure and reporting options at initial contact.
- Immediately notify first responders (e.g., Emergency Medical Services, law enforcement) during crisis situations where there is imminent harm to the victim, their children, or program staff.
- Conduct domestic abuse training and awareness programs for soldiers, families, and civilians.
- Guide families through the investigative process related to Problematic Sexual Behavior‑Child and Youth (PSB‑CY); encourage participation and help clarify rights of crime victims.
- Formulate intervention strategies to improve family coping skills during child‑abuse case investigations and prosecutions.
- Identify and meet the needs of children and families in crisis; educate non‑offending caregivers about dynamics and long‑term consequences of child abuse.
- Assist families with Crime Victims’ Compensation applications and serve as liaison with multidisciplinary team members.
- Represent child and family interests at multidisciplinary team case review meetings; accompany non‑offending caregivers to court or other appointments when requested.
- Participate in community awareness campaigns and prevention events.
- Maintain ongoing case management; complete data entry within three business days; ensure daily contact with victims in crisis and at least every 30 days when not in crisis.
- When a victim departs the servicing area, transfer the case appropriately; close cases upon completion of advocacy services with FAPM concurrence.
- Work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and some daytime hours; part‑time positions range from 12 to 35 hours per week.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in social work, psychology, marriage, family, and child counseling, counseling or behavioral science, education, community health, or public health.
- At least two years of experience working with victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault, or victim advocacy services.
- Availability to provide crisis intervention 24hours a day, 7 days per week.
- Willingness to travel within a 50‑mile radius of the assigned work location.
This position is included in a bargaining unit. Pay rates are specified in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
