Bus Drivers contracted for a minimum of 4 hours per day for the school year to be assigned to any available AM and PM route on any given day. Individuals in this position safely transport students and other authorized persons on prescribed routes, field trips, extracurricular and special activity trips as authorized by the school district officials.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Operate the assigned school bus in accordance with Washington law and district policies.
- Operate the bus in all weather conditions.
- Follow prescribed routes and time schedules, picking up and dropping off students at designated stops.
- Oversee loading and unloading of students, ensuring safety protocols.
- Conduct safety and operational inspections at least twice a day.
- Maintain the bus in a safe and clean condition as per department standards.
- Follow procedures for students with special health conditions.
- Secure wheelchairs, verifying operating safety before transport.
- Use the GPS unit and two‑way radio for communication with the Dispatching Unit.
- Maintain discipline among students on the bus.
- Build positive relationships with parents and the public.
- Keep required records: daily reports, mileage, routing, maintenance.
- Attend professional development to maintain licensure and meet student needs.
- Maintain a current DOT physical and First Aid/CPR certification.
- Perform other school bus driver and miscellaneous duties as directed.
- Minimum age 21.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s Permit, Class B CDL with passenger and school bus endorsements.
- Current medical examiner’s certificate.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Complete a Washington State Patrol and FBI background check.
- Complete a school bus driver training program.
- Meet ongoing requirements for school bus driver authorization, including a review of the five‑year driver abstract.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work professionally with all levels.
- Ability to remain calm under stress and handle problematic situations independently.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and enter data in automated systems.
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Quickly adapt to new circumstances as they arise.
Pay and benefits are governed by the collective bargaining agreement of Local 1135-M to F of the Washington State Council of County and City Employees, AFSCME, AFL‑CIO. Salary range for substitute/non‑contract drivers is $22.37 to $26.18 per hour. Upon accepting a regular continuing position, the driver receives full experience credit for prior employment as a non‑contract driver or any other bus driving experience, up to the maximum step.
Employees accumulate twelve (12) days of sick leave per year, prorated for less than a full year. A maximum of three (3) days of annual leave are provided for all employees based on scheduled hours, to be used for absences or saved for cash out.
Those working more than 630 hours per year qualify for benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB). Employees working 70 hours or more per month for at least five months per year qualify for retirement benefits through the State Department of Retirement Services.
