Highway Maintenance Worker 2
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is currently seeking multiple Highway Maintenance Worker 2s to join our regional maintenance team. In these journey-level roles, you will operate a variety of highway maintenance equipment and tools to maintain and repair state highways and highway structures, helping ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. These positions perform a wide range of skilled maintenance activities in support of Washington's transportation system.
Opportunities may also include leading a maintenance crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3.
The typical schedule is Monday through Thursday, with four 10-hour shifts (40 hours per week). This position requires participation in a rotational night shift and may require working nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, standby, and call-back to respond to emergencies or operational needs. Employees must be able to report to the assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call and respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, independently or as part of a team.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:
- Perform highway maintenance activities, including asphalt and concrete pavement repairs, drainage system maintenance, erosion control, and repairs to signs, guardrails, fences, and impact attenuators.
- Maintain roadside infrastructure by removing hazardous trees, establishing and restoring landscaped areas, removing litter and roadway debris, and hauling maintenance materials.
- Operate snow and ice control equipment, load and transport materials, and maintain stockpile sites to keep roadways safe and open for travel.
- Respond to emergencies by establishing traffic control, supporting road and bridge closures, operating attenuator vehicles, and assisting at collision scenes, spills, and other incidents.
- Coordinate emergency response activities with internal staff and external agencies while providing updates and recommending additional resources as needed.
- Inspect, maintain, and perform minor repairs on maintenance equipment, vehicles, hand tools, and power tools to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Assist with the safe cleanup and removal of unlawful dwellings while following established procedures for hazardous materials and coordinating with partner agencies.
- Lead maintenance crews in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3 by planning work, assigning tasks, and providing equipment instruction and on-the-job training.
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- Technical & Operational Expertise: Ability to apply knowledge and skills in highway and maintenance operations, including traffic control, vehicle operation, snow and ice ops, and equipment handling, ensuring safe and effective completion of tasks.
- Highway Maintenance Operations: Demonstrated ability to perform roadway maintenance, snow and ice ops, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent work requiring similar knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Effectively communicate with diverse audiences, both orally and in writing, to provide clear information and support collaboration.
- Customer Service Excellence: Provide responsive, courteous, and professional service to internal and external customers, resolving issues and maintaining positive relationships.

In addition to the above, the following are also required:
- Class B CDL with N endorsement without restrictions. Must obtain Class A CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction within 12 months of hiring. (WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement. To include a valid DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate.)
- Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD, including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging; or obtained within six months of employment.
- Obtain and maintain a valid First Aid/CPR certification within six months of hire.
- Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
- Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to report in service to the assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
- This position requires participation in emergency response, including nights, weekends, holidays, standby, and call-back as needed.
