Highway Maintenance Worker 2

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is currently seeking multiple non-permanent Highway Maintenance Worker positions to join our North Central Region Area 3 maintenance teams in Brewster, Coulee City, Electric City, Mansfield, Tonasket, and Twisp for the winter maintenance season. We are looking for self-motivated individuals who are mechanically inclined and enjoy working outdoors. The successful candidates will perform a variety of skilled tasks including operating snow removal equipment, repairing roadways, maintaining culverts and catch basins, removing debris, and providing traffic control for these operations.

These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors, often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic and may require standing for extended periods of time. HMW2s may work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water and traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain. A typical schedule is 40 hours per week, for four (4), 10-hour shifts.

Nights, weekends, and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Maintain highways for safe, open travel by performing snow and ice control, operating snowplows and deicing equipment, removing avalanche and slide debris, hauling materials, and maintaining stockpile sites.
  • Perform routine highway maintenance, including pavement repair, drainage and culvert maintenance, erosion and slide repair, sign and guardrail repair, fence maintenance, vegetation management, and roadside cleanup.
  • Operate and maintain a wide variety of highway maintenance equipment, including Class A, B, and C equipment, such as snow and ice response vehicles, hydraulic excavators, loaders, graders, cranes, paving equipment, sweepers, Vactor, and attenuator trucks.
  • Install, repair, and maintain highway infrastructure and roadside features, including catch basins, sedimentation facilities, ditches, impact attenuators, landscaped areas, and other state right-of-way assets.
  • Respond to emergencies and roadway incidents by establishing traffic control, flagging traffic, supporting lane and road closures, and coordinating responses with external agencies.
  • Maintain and perform minor repairs on vehicles, equipment, and hand tools, including cleaning, greasing, sharpening power saws and chains, and completing other preventative maintenance activities.
  • Remove graffiti and highway debris, including danger tree removal.
  • Document daily work activities, track and maintain inventory, and prepare damage estimates as needed.

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Highway and Roadway Maintenance Expertise: Demonstrated experience performing routine and emergency maintenance on highways, roadways, and related infrastructure including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal. Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
  • Heavy Equipment Operations: Skilled in operating and maintaining heavy equipment (e.g. front-end loaders, tractor mowers, sweepers, flushers, truck-mounted attenuators, backhoe, vactor, 32, GVW Dump truck with snowplow and chemical deicer attachments)
  • Safety Awareness & Compliance: Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling. Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
  • Technical & Administrative Proficiency: Ability to use electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating. Proficient in standard computer applications including Microsoft Office and email communication.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently in the field. Capable of leading a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, demonstrating sound decision-making and leadership skills.

The following qualifications are also required:

  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with N endorsement and without airbrake restrictions.
  • Possession of a valid CDL Medical Card.
  • Possession of a Washington State Flagging Card or the ability to obtain one within two (2) months of hire.
  • Possession of a First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.
