Job Summary

The Director of Teaching and Learning provides the strategic vision and day-to-day leadership necessary to translate district strategy into operational excellence across all instructional systems. This role is responsible for the design, development, alignment, implementation, and evaluation of the district wide curriculum, assessment systems, and educational programs. A primary focus is ensuring that instructional staff have the necessary skills, materials, and professional development to enhance student engagement and boost achievement.

The Director collaborates across the district to ensure cohesive, consistent, and high-quality teaching and learning practices in every school. The Director reports directly to the Superintendent.

Essential Functions
  • Manage the design, alignment, development, adoption, implementation, and evaluation of district wide curriculum, instruction, and assessment processes across all content areas.
  • Oversee district assessment systems and support/model effective, data-driven decision-making processes for teachers and administrators.
  • Seek, research, and implement instructional models and initiatives to improve student learning, working in collaboration with directors, principals, teachers and district partners.
  • Collect, analyze, and communicate student achievement data district wide.
  • Plan, organize, design, and implement district wide professional development systems and staff training that align with curriculum needs and district goals, incorporating adult learning theory and job-embedded supports.
  • Directly participate in the planning, organizing, development, and alignment of district wide Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) spanning academic, social, and emotional needs, partnering with Student Support to align intervention systems.
  • Serve as an instructional resource to principals and teacher leaders.
  • Coordinate building instructional leadership teams.
  • Serve as a contributing member of the District’s executive team and collaborate across departments to ensure integrated instructional systems and address district wide initiatives or concerns.
  • Supervise and evaluate principals, program directors, instructional coaches (math, literacy, MTSS, teacher induction), and relevant district office staff through regular meetings.
  • Lead by identifying systemic barriers and assisting to create culturally responsive and inclusive systems for each student.
  • Participate in the recruitment, screening, assignment, evaluation, and training of instructional and related services staff members.
  • Provide leadership, administrative direction, budget support, and oversight for specific program areas including:
    Early Learning, Dual Language/Multilingual Learners/English Language Proficiency, Learning Assistance Program, Title, BEST Mentorship program , Library/Media, Fine Arts, and WLA (K-5 and 9-12).
  • Responsible for OSPI’s Program Review and Support (PRS) process each cycle.
  • Responsible for instructional grant applications, compliance, and management through OSPI’s EGMS system.
  • Develop and manage budgets for all assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Monitor programs and professional development focused on student success and belonging.
  • Ensure fair and consistent implementation of district policies, regulations, and procedures regarding discipline, promotion, retention, grading, and graduation requirements.
