Job

Overview

The School Bus Driver transports students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions; ensures the vehicle is clean, safe, and in good operating condition; and ensures safety and good conduct of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.

This position reports to the Transportation Supervisor.

Essential Functions
  • Advise and train students and other passengers on appropriate behavior to ensure passenger safety.
  • Assess incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations, and recommend resolution.
  • Assist students and others during loading and unloading, including emergency situations.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, etc. to maintain and learn new skills and meet certificate requirements.
  • Clean vehicles, interior and exterior.
  • Communicate with school personnel, parents, etc. about schedules and issues.
  • Conduct emergency evacuation drills.
  • Drive school bus(es) over scheduled routes safely and timely.
  • Fuel vehicle appropriately.
  • Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections.
  • Prepare documents and reports for support and communication.
  • Report observations and incidents to appropriate personnel.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, parents, and school personnel.
  • Supervise students and passengers during transit.
Other Functions
  • Assist other personnel as needed to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills:

adherence to safety practices; operating transportation equipment; preparing accurate records.

Knowledge: basic math; understanding written procedures; knowledge of safety practices, policies, regulations, and area streets.

Abilities: scheduling; data handling; problem solving; teamwork; communication; maintaining confidentiality and positive attitude.

Experience Job‑related experience is required.

Education High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Testing, Certificates & Licenses

Pre‑employment proficiency test:
Valid driver’s license with Class B and school bus endorsement
Pre‑employment drug test – DOT Medical Card
Valid First Aid Certificate

Continuing Education / Training

Annual driver in‑service WA State misconduct clearance
Criminal justice fingerprint/background clearance

FLSA Status & Salary Grade
