Under supervision performs a variety of teaching support functions in an emotionally disturbed/behaviorally disordered or self‑contained environment. Assists Special Education instructors in planning and implementing student Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s), provides teaching assistance to individual students and/or small groups, and provides requisite student care as necessary to ensure the effective delivery of student learning activities.
Distinguishing Characteristics- Duty 1: Enters student IEPs into a computer system and prints student data files/information according to established procedures.
Frequency: Daily - Duty 2: Prepares and returns materials for classroom use and related activities. Locates necessary supplies, reproduces class notes and/or handouts, prepares bulletin boards and craft projects and cleans/organizes classroom.
Frequency: Daily - Duty 3: Provides attendant care for moderately and severely handicapped and/or emotionally disturbed/behaviorally disruptive students throughout the school day. May assist students off/on buses; monitor student activities and safety.
Frequency: Daily - Duty 4: Professional staff by typing, filing, duplicating and organizing materials for distribution; grades student projects/exams using specified criteria; maintains attendance records; assists instructors with screening/testing.
Frequency: Daily - Duty 5: Assists special education instructors in planning and implementing IEPs. Provides teaching assistance to individuals and/or small groups, monitors performance, provides information.
Frequency: Daily - Duty 6: Assists instructors in scheduling parent conferences, IEP meetings, and student visits to school nurse.
Frequency: As needed - Duty 7: Provides other administrative assistance (e.g., proctoring detentions, picking up prescriptions, transporting students).
Frequency: As needed - Duty 8: Makes phone contacts concerning meetings, as directed by supervising teacher.
Frequency: Daily - Duty 9: Other duties as assigned.

Applicants must be highly qualified prior to the end of the probationary period. Highly qualified means meeting paraprofessional requirements as defined by No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED
- Two years of college (at least 48 semester‑hour credits)
- Associate’s degree or higher
- Pass the Para Pro Assessment and the Paraprofessional Standards Checklist

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Basic computer proficiency
Previous education, training, work or life experience providing evidence of performance of the tasks listed. May be evidenced by six months of providing attendant care in an emotionally disturbed/behaviorally disordered and/or self‑contained environment.
Licensing RequirementsA valid Alaska Driver's License.
Physical RequirementsRegularly required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl to assist students; use hand strength to grasp items; occasionally lift, carry, push or pull up to 40 lbs. Vision: close, distance, depth perception.
Medium Work- Maximum weight of 40 lbs. lifted/carrying occasionally (less than 33% of the time)
- Maximum force of 40 lbs. pushing or pulling to move objects
- Floor to knuckle: 25 lbs; 12” to knuckle: 40 lbs
