Join The Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer 2 at Goose Creek Correctional Complex (GCCC) in Wasilla, Alaska.
What You Will Be DoingEmbark on a career in Corrections with 12-14 months of structured field training and a seven-week academy. After training, you will be certified as a Correctional Officer by the Alaska Police Standards Council. Your role will involve maintaining order, ensuring safety, and providing rehabilitative support for inmates.
Core Competencies- Follow oral and written instructions, use business software, and communicate effectively.
- Learn and apply techniques of self‑defense, firearms, appropriate force, and emergency response.
- Read and apply statutes, regulations, and procedures, and explain them to the public and inmates.
- Assist with maintaining order, operating the security control room, handling unruly prisoners, and conducting routine inspections.
- Assist in creating a rehabilitative environment for prisoners.
- Completion of the Alaska Correctional Officer Academy or an equivalent program accredited by the Alaska Police Standards Council.
- One year of experience in an adult correctional institution (e.g., as a Correctional Officer
1). - Age 21 or older; U.S. citizen or national.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent;
General Educational Development certificate acceptable. - Valid U.S. driver’s license;
Commercial Driver’s License may be required for some positions. - Willingness to work shift assignments, on‑call availability, and a "week on/week off" schedule.
- Successful completion of background investigation, drug screening, medical exam, and psychological evaluation.
Correctional Officers receive up to 16 days of paid leave in the first two years, increasing with service, and 12 paid holidays annually.
