What You Will Be DoingEmbark on a career in Corrections with structured training and promotion paths. As a correctional officer, you will play a vital role in reforming inmates, maintaining a secure environment, and supporting rehabilitative programs for up to 1,472 offenders. The position is an 84‑hour work week with a week‑on/week‑off schedule that alternates day and night shifts.

- Age 21 or older; U.S. citizen or national
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Successful completion of the Alaska Correctional Officer Academy (or an APSC‑accredited program) and at least one year of experience as a Correctional Officer 1 or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license (Commercial Driver’s License may be required for some positions)
- Willingness to work shifts, on‑call, and be available during the 84‑hour week schedule
- Must pass a thorough background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug screening, and medical examination, including APSIN clearance
- Willingness to handle firearms and use of force; applicants convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are ineligible
- Follow oral and written instructions and use business software
- Apply self‑defense, firearms, and appropriate force techniques to protect self and others and resolve conflicts quickly
- Read, understand, and apply statutes, regulations, and procedures; explain these to the public and inmates
- Maintain order and discipline, operate a security control room, conduct security checks and inspections
- Contribute to a rehabilitative environment for prisoners
