Job Summary

The City of Wasilla Police Department is currently hiring for Police Officer I and Police Officer II positions. These are non‑exempt, full‑time roles with benefits. Police officers enforce laws, protect life and property, and maintain peace and order within Wasilla city limits. Officers must be willing to work all shifts—including day, evening, night, holidays, weekends, and overtime.

• Police Officer I: $36.30 per hour ($75,504 annually).
• Police Officer II
  :
  For lateral transfers with at least one year of certified law‑enforcement experience. Pay scale is based on years of prior experience:
  • 1 year: $40.35/hr – $83,928 annually
  • 2 years: $41.39/hr – $86,091.20 annually
  • 3 years: $42.44/hr – $88,275.20 annually
  • 4 years: $43.53/hr – $90,542.40 annually
  • 5 years: $44.64/hr – $92,851.20 annually
  • Up to 15 years: $55.94/hr – $ annually

• 4% swing shift differential; 7% night shift differential.
• 12–22 hours of paid leave per month (service‑based).
• Take‑home vehicle (30‑mile limit).
• Employer‑paid academy, uniform, and equipment.
• Educational incentive: 5% for a bachelor’s degree, 2.5% for an associate’s degree.
• $100 per pay period for advanced police certificate (APSC).
• 11 paid city holidays plus two floating holidays.

• Respond to initial calls for assistance and public safety needs.
• Patrol city limits, identify hazards, prevent crimes, conduct security checks, and actively seek violators.
• Issue warnings and conduct arrests according to department policy.
• Investigate traffic accidents and report violations.
• Collect evidence, interview witnesses, and write detailed reports.
• Serve as a community role model to inspire cooperation and respect for law‑enforcement programs.
• Enforce federal, state, and local laws fairly and without discrimination.
• Interpret and enforce city ordinances.
• Assist other public‑safety agencies as needed.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by ranking officer or chief.
• Police Officer II may serve as a Field Training Officer or as required.

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; capability to type at a net speed of 35 words per minute; minimum age 21. Must be a U.S. citizen or naturalized citizen, possess a valid U.S. driver’s license, and provide a recent driving record.

• Must obtain an Alaska Police Standards Council Basic Police Officer I certificate within the first year of employment.
• Background investigation, physical agility test, physical examination, polygraph, psychological examinations, drug screen, and oral board procedures.

• Meets Alaska Police Standards Council requirements and Police Officer I qualifications.
• Experience as a state trooper or municipal police officer.
• Valid Alaska driver’s license and recent driving record.
• Alaska Police Standards Council “Basic Certificate” or equivalent from another state.
