As a PRN Nuclear Medicine Technologist
, you are responsible for performing tests for diagnosis and/or medical research by preparing and administering small doses of radioactive drugs (radiopharmaceuticals) to patients, followed by the use of high-level imaging equipment to record images of the radioactive material in the body. This may include Nuclear Medicine examinations and/or Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and PET/CT examinations. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is accountable for performing the correct nuclear examinations while maintaining a safe radioactive environment and will document activities related to radiopharmaceutical administration and radiation exposure in accordance with federal and state laws, regulations, or lawful institutional policy.
The role will require flexibility with availability as a per-diem technologist, responding promptly to requests for coverage due to absences or vacations, and covering at minimum one shift in a 30 day period.
- Administer ionizing radiation in conjunction with radiopharmaceuticals to obtain diagnostic exams as ordered by the physician and — consistent with all applicable legal requirements and restrictions — exercise individual thought, judgment and discretion in the performance of the procedure. Administration of non-narcotic medication may be required for effective diagnostic imaging and scanning, as indicated by provider orders.
- Demonstrate independent competency in radiopharmaceutical administration, including starting and discontinuing peripheral IVs, and administration through other vascular access points such as ports, CVLs and PICC lines if indicated. Utilize safe techniques to include protective shielding and prescribe safety standards for the preparation and handling of radioactive sources and maintain records of radioisotope receipt, use, storage and disposal in accordance with state and federal regulations governing the accountability for radioactive materials.
Knowledge and ability to demonstrate competency of differing Nuclear Medicine equipment, and if applicable PET/CT equipment. Demonstrates the ability to use all channels of communications to address concerns, solve problems, and address conflict. - Maintain levels of quality that meet or exceed customer expectations through process improvement and a team-oriented approach. Complete annual and on-going education and site specific competencies/in-services as designated by leadership. Maintain confidentiality in matters relating to patients, family and staff in compliance with HIPAA. Demonstrate proficiency of Akumin’s EMR systems, as well as PACS and DICOM systems for image sharing and interpretation.
- Effectively communicates with patients and/or radiologists. Train and orient new technologists, patient coordinators as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by leadership.
- High School Diploma or equivalent experience required;
Associate's Degree or equivalent experience preferred. - NMTCB or ARRT (N)
- State license, if applicable required.
- CPR Certification, BLS from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC). ACLS certification where applicable.
- Valid state driver’s license, as applicable required.
- Ability to work at several locations.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Organizational, multi-tasking, and critical thinking skills.
- Basic knowledge of computer applications and programs.
- Local travel may be required.
- Associate's Degree or Equivalent Experience
- 1-2 years of experience in Nuclear Medicine procedures and studies.
The employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions during transport of patients if working on a mobile unit. The employee will be exposed to a strong magnetic field. May be exposed to blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
More than 50% of the time:
- Sit, stand, walk.
- Repetitive movement of hands, arms and legs.
- See, speak and hear to be able to communicate with patients.
Less than 50% of the time:
- Stoop, kneel or crawl.
- Climb and balance.
- Carry and lift (ability to move non-ambulatory patients from a sitting or lying position for transfer or to exam).
