Position Overview

We are seeking a
Mid to Senior Systems Engineer with extensive experience in federal healthcare environments to join our enterprise IT engineering team. In this fully remote role, you will lead the architecture, engineering, deployment, and security compliance of large-scale infrastructure and cloud systems supporting mission-critical federal health programs.

You will work at the intersection of enterprise infrastructure, HIPAA/FISMA security governance, and clinical/federal systems integration, ensuring high availability, strict regulatory compliance, and seamless cross-functional delivery across agencies such as HHS, CMS, VA, Defense Health Agency (DHA), or NIH.

Key Responsibilities
  • System Architecture & Infrastructure Automation: Design, build, scale, and maintain secure hybrid cloud environments (AWS Gov Cloud, Azure Government) and enterprise infrastructure; automate provisioning and configuration using Infrastructure as Code tools (Terraform, Ansible, Cloud Formation).

  • Federal Healthcare Security & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to federal healthcare security frameworks (
HIPAA, HITECH, NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5, FISMA High/Moderate
, and agency-specific guidelines like CMS ARS or VA Security Architecture).

  • Authority to Operate (ATO) Support: Drive the technical aspects of the ATO lifecycle by engineering required technical controls, implementing DISA STIGs and CIS Benchmarks, and mitigating Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M) remediation items.

  • Health Systems & Data Integration: Architect and maintain backend infrastructure supporting Electronic Health Record (EHR/EMR) integrations, health data analytics platforms, and secure health data exchange standards (
    HL7, FHIR, DICOM
), ensuring Protection of PHI/PII data in transit and at rest.

  • Systems Administration & Observability: Administer enterprise Linux (RHEL, Ubuntu) and Windows Server environments, network pathways, identity management systems (Active Directory, Okta, SAML, PIV/CAC integration), and CI/CD/observability tools (Cloud Watch, Datadog, Splunk).

  • Stakeholder Collaboration & Leadership: Partner with software developers, data engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and federal contracting officers (CORs/COTRs); mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews and architecture standards.

Required Qualifications
  • Work Experience:

    • Mid-Level: 5+ years of systems engineering, cloud engineering, or Dev Ops experience, with at least 3+ years directly supporting federal healthcare agencies (e.g., HHS, CMS, VA, DHA, NIH) or federal health IT contractors.

    • Senior-Level: 8+ years of enterprise systems engineering experience, with 4+ years dedicated to federal healthcare systems and compliance frameworks.

  • Technical Proficiency:

    • Hands-on expertise with AWS Gov Cloud or Azure Government, Terraform/Ansible, and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes/EKS/AKS).

    • Advanced proficiency in Linux (RHEL preferred) or Windows Server administration paired with shell scripting capabilities (Python, Bash, or Power Shell).

    • In-depth practical knowledge of NIST SP 800-53, FISMA, HIPAA, and DISA STIG baseline implementations.

  • Certifications (Must possess at least ONE valid certification):

    • Cloud: AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate/Professional), Azure Solutions Architect, or AWS Certified Security - Specialty.

    • Security & Compliance: CISSP, CompTIA Security+, CISA, or CCSP.

    • System Administration: Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator), or Hashi Corp Certified:
      Terraform Associate.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent professional experience).
