WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

The Academy lieutenant oversees operations at the DPS Training Academy providing leadership and direction for all instructional, administrative, and facility-related functions. The role includes managing daily activities, coordinating training programs, and ensuring policies and procedures are followed throughout the academy. When recruit classes are in session, the lieutenant is responsible for the performance, conduct, and overall supervision of recruits, as well as any guest instructors or temporarily assigned personnel.

The position also plays a key role in maintaining training standards, supporting staff development, and fostering a professional learning environment.

The D Detachment lieutenant serves as one of two deputy commanders for "D" Detachment. Reporting directly to the detachment commander, it provides leadership, oversight, and guidance to patrol post supervisors throughout the region. The role assists in managing daily operational priorities, supporting detachment-wide administrative functions, and ensuring alignment with organizational policies, standards, and strategic objectives.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Comprehensive understanding of DPS organization, rules, and regulations.

Strong expertise in leadership, supervision, human resource management, labor relations, and public administration principles.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information.

Preferred:
Advanced certification from the Alaska Police Standards Council.

Preferred:
Advanced law enforcement management training from the Southern Police Institute, FBI National Academy, or Northwestern University
