Job Summary

The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing quality veterinary care, ensuring a safe hospital environment, and educating clients.

Responsibilities
  • Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc.
  • Act as extra help for the veterinarian and veterinary technician, ensuring best quality care and productivity.
  • Communicate with veterinarians, technicians and other associates to maintain patient flow.
  • Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service; perform or prepare procedures that do not require veterinarian assistance, and complete preparatory work for other procedures.
  • Ensure client and pet comfort and monitor hospitalized or surgical pets as allowed under state practice acts.
  • Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, pet health needs, and hospital services.
  • Obtain relevant history from clients and maintain proper medical charts.
  • Ensure pet, client, and associate safety by using safe restraining techniques, following protocols, and keeping treatment areas clean and sterile.
  • Assist with surgery as applicable.
  • Utilize technical skills within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines for veterinary assistant duties.
  • Mentor other paraprofessionals in the hospital.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
  • Long periods at a computer.

  • Work may exceed 40 hours weekly; includes weekends and evenings.

  • Moderately high noise level in work environment.
  • Requires ambulatory skills; stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift up to 50lb.
  • Good hand‑eye coordination and manual dexterity needed.
  • Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, medications.
Pay Range

$15.99 – $20.44 hourly (based on experience, skill level, and education).
