Position: Streets Maintenance Worker I

Under direct supervision of the Streets Supervisor or Streets Equipment Operator, the Maintenance Worker I assists the division to maintain and repair the City’s streets, right‑of‑ways and drainage system. Position may work independently or as part of a crew, depending on the assigned task.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Works as a member of the street maintenance repair crew, performing various tasks and functions such as pouring concrete, shoveling asphalt, raking, tamping and smoothing asphalt, excavating dirt, pothole repair, barricade maintenance, filling sandbags, ice and flood control, and picking up debris on streets and right‑of‑ways.
  • Performs labor duties involved in repairing and constructing concrete or asphalt streets, curbs, storm drains, etc.
  • Operates a variety of Public Works Street equipment incidental to work assignments, including jack hammers, spray paint guns, rollers, front‑end loaders, tamper, chain saws, weed eaters, mowers and trucks.
  • Shovels, rakes, tamp and levels asphalt.
  • Assists with building forms, pouring and finishing concrete.
  • Assists with trimming vegetation along right of ways, signage and other areas as needed.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment used in daily activities.
  • Assists with traffic control set up at the job site to ensure a safe working environment, placing and gathering delineators, barricades, cones, flags and other devices as needed.
  • Assists in painting or installing buttons, crosswalks and other traffic markings.
  • Assists in the installation of traffic and street signs.
  • Stand by operations for inclement weather including snow/ice treatment and removal, flooding and emergency response.
  • Always ensures safety procedures and proper use of safety equipment.
  • May perform other assignments and assist with special projects as required.

Scope of Supervision

Works under direct supervision of the Streets Supervisor or Streets Equipment Operator.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in road construction, street maintenance or concrete work preferred. Must possess a Texas Driver’s License. Texas Class A CDL Driver License required within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must obtain Work Zone Traffic Control certification within one year of hire.
  • To be considered for employment in this position applicants must comply with Department of Transportation Federal Regulations and the City of Watauga Drug Policy.
  • Any work‑related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Work Environment

Continuous outdoor and indoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards, occasional kneeling, crawling, carrying up to 100 pounds, lifting up to 100 pounds. Outside construction and machinery activities performed under normal field operations. Exposed to seasonal temperatures while operating and maintaining heavy construction equipment.

Possibility of exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, materials and inclement weather while in the field.

Skills and Abilities
  • Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of the provisions in the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to the operation of motorized equipment on public streets and highways.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws relating to road construction.
  • Knowledge in the use of standard hand tools, operation of light power‑driven equipment, trucks, and other vehicles.
  • Knowledge of City practice, policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Skill in providing good customer service.
  • Ability to quickly learn and retain how to use all required tools, equipment, and vehicles in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to clearly communicate and understand information in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with other employees, departments, and the general public, and exhibit a positive attitude.
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule.
