Works under the general direction of the Fleet and Facilities Superintendent performing a dual function as a maintenance repair mechanic of equipment, and vehicles, supervises mechanics, and manages the parts and work order system. Diagnoses and troubleshooting of diesel and gasoline engines, repairs of electrical, hydraulic systems, engine repairs, and preventative maintenance. Knowledge of fire apparatus, construction equipment, general knowledge of repairs associated with public works equipment, and department of public safety vehicles along with welding, cutting, and metal fabrication experience.

  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled repairs to the City’s fleet of standard and emergency vehicles and equipment.
  • Specializes in automotive electrical and emergency vehicle equipment repairs.
  • Performs the full range of equipment mechanical duties; performs the most complex vehicle maintenance duties, while also providing technical assistance to technicians.
  • Responds to roadside or field repairs.
  • Conducts new vehicle and equipment check-in, make-ready, and decommissioning operations.
  • Plans, assigns, supervises, and participates in the work of fleet maintenance personnel.
  • Specializes in automotive electrical and emergency vehicle equipment repairs.
  • Performs the full range of equipment mechanic duties; performs the most complex vehicle maintenance duties; provides technical assistance to mechanics and training to equipment operators.
  • Monitors and controls supplies and equipment, andorders parts, supplies, and tools as necessary.
  • Requisition s for parts and materials used in the garage such as tires, oil and lubricants, and miscellaneous parts.
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Ability to work overtime, on-call, and emergency call-in, as needed or determined by the business need of the department.
  • Performs all other work as required.
SCOPE OF SUPERVISION
  • Works under general supervision of the Fleet and Facilities Superintendent.
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines

High school diploma or equivalent; AND six years (6) of job-related experience in automotive and heavy equipment repairs including some supervisory lead. Associate degree preferred. Must provide own tools. Automotive Services Excellence (A.S.E.) and Emergency Vehicle Technician (E.V.T.) Certifications, preferred.

Knowledge of:
  • City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • City ordinances and applicable state laws.
  • Street and drainage maintenance and construction practices and methods.
  • Tools, equipment, methods, and materials used in public works.
  • Principles and practices of effective employee supervision.
  • Principles and practices of project management.
  • Organize, implement, and direct vehicle maintenance operations and activities.
  • Applicable policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.
  • Customer service principles and practices.
  • Principles of record keeping.
  • Standard accepted practices for welding and fabrication work.
  • Operating principles of diesel engines, and of the standard mechanical components of automotive and related equipment.
  • Principles of internal combustion engines, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Skill in:
  • Handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Using computers and related software, Internet, and email.
  • Planning and organizing.
  • Use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment (i.e. scan tool).
  • Oral and written communication.
  • Interpreting and applying City codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Reading and understanding manuals, plans, drawings, specificationsschematics, and drawings for repairs & maintenance under manufacturers’ recommendations for troubleshooting,
