Summary of ClassificationThis class is accountable for planning and providing appropriate learning experiences for students, creating an environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development, and ensuring success for every student.
Minimum Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
- Valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate/endorsement(s) 015 English, 7-12.
- Current Motor Vehicle operator’s license (may be required).
- Completion of all State CEU requirements for recertification.
- Considerable knowledge of core curriculum, educational philosophy, teaching methods, child development, classroom management, district curriculum, instructional technologies, learning theory, multicultural and disability inclusive content, PBIS, SRBI, and the teaching/learning process.
- Excellent listening, oral and written communication, human relations, classroom management and presentation, conflict mediation, report preparation, and technology integration skills.
- Ability to interact with students, parents, staff, and community from diverse backgrounds, adapt teaching styles, apply PBIS and SRBI, evaluate student performance, foster higher achievement, multi‑task, plan and implement lesson plans, provide multicultural instruction, use technology, collaborate with administrators and colleagues, work cooperatively, and support students with diverse needs.
- May direct the work of paraprofessionals.
- Assist administration in implementing policies, develop classroom rules, and maintain order.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on committees.
- Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and community.
- Create a classroom environment that encourages student involvement and achievement of objectives.
- Develop, select, and modify instructional plans and materials to meet all students’ needs.
- Diagnose learning disabilities and collaborate with central staff; provide input to IEPs.
- Establish learning objectives aligned with district curriculum and student needs.
- Build relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community, respecting all individuals.
- Guide the learning process toward curriculum goals, clarify objectives for lessons, units, and projects.
- Maintain accurate records as required by law, district policy, and regulations; keep appropriate documentation.
- Make yourself available to students and parents outside instructional hours under reasonable terms.
- Monitor and evaluate student outcomes and appropriate use of equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Regularly attend and instruct assigned classes at designated times and locations.
- Participate in school management and share responsibility for the overall school program.
- Plan a program of study meeting the needs, interests, and abilities of students.
- Plan supportive assignments for paraprofessionals, assistants, volunteers.
- Use instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques that motivate and enable students to achieve objectives.
- Prepare for classes and provide written evidence of preparation when requested.
- Deliver instructional programs to all students, including those with disabilities.
- Supervise students in various school settings.
- Take necessary safety precautions to protect students and property.
- Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside instructional hours if required.
- Perform related work as needed.
Employees must possess adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity to perform job duties; a physical examination may be required. Practical demands include standing, walking, sitting, driving, and lifting up to 100 lbs, as well as exposure to varied environmental conditions.
