Overview
The Connecticut Teacher Residency Program is an alternate route to certification focused on increasing educators of color in elementary schools within Waterbury Public Schools. Resident candidates will complete rigorous coursework for 18 months and serve in a paid residency position in a Mentor Teacher’s classroom for the school year. Mentor Teachers will work side‑by‑side with their Resident and be supported by the program coordinator for one academic school year to help Residents prepare for a successful career in education.
Responsibilities- Serve in a Resident position under the guidance of a designated Mentor Teacher for the academic school year for the hours specified by the partner school district.
- Plan instruction and meet with Mentors beyond required staff hours (up to 2 additional hours per week).
- Complete 18 months of coursework: six weeks each summer (must attend all summer classes) and additional cohort meetings and evenings during the school year.
- Attend district and school‑based professional development sessions.
- Pass assessment requirements (edTPA, Foundations of Reading Test, Praxis II) for Connecticut State certification in Grades 1‑6 elementary education.
- Upon successful completion of the program and certification requirements, commit to accepting a classroom teaching position in the District for a period of three years.
- Education and Experience
- Accepted into the CT Teacher Residency Program.
- Completed a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 39 semester hours in general academic courses, including at least five of the following areas:
English, Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Social Studies, Foreign Language, or Fine Arts. - Some knowledge of core curriculum areas for which the Resident is responsible, including specialized knowledge in certain fields such as reading, mathematics, science, music, art, languages, and so forth, as appropriate.
- Some knowledge of educational philosophy, teaching methods, and best practices.
- Some knowledge of child development, classroom management techniques, instructional technologies, PBIS, SRBI, community resources.
- Excellent listening skills and ability to interact effectively with students, parents, and diverse staff.
- Ability to adapt teaching styles and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to multi‑task, be flexible, and utilize computer and multimedia technology as appropriate.
- Licensing / Certifications
- Incumbents may be required to possess a current Motor Vehicle Class D Operator’s License.
- Other Requirements
- Background investigation and reference checking will be conducted.
Employees in this class must possess adequate physical strength, stamina, visual and auditory acuity, and maintain fitness sufficient to perform the duties of the class. Physical examination may be required. Working conditions include standing, walking, sitting, driving, lifting (up to 100 lbs.), and exposure to routine classroom activities. The duties will also involve classroom instruction, meeting with mentors, attending professional development sessions, and performing administrative tasks related to residency support.
