The Mattatuck Museum is a vibrant art and regional history museum located on the historic Green in downtown Waterbury, CT. Position Overview

The Learning Coordinator is a creative and strategic leader responsible for conceptualizing, managing, and delivering high-impact educational and community programming. This versatile position bridges structured learning initiatives with broad public engagement. Because our department values the unique talents of our team, the final scope and balance of duties for this role will be tailored based on the primary strengths and background of the selected candidate.

This position has a tentative start date of October 6, 2026.

Core Responsibilities
  • Direct Delivery & Teaching:
    Serve as a lead educator on the front lines by facilitating school and group tours, leading after-school programs, and delivering off-site outreach through MATT on the GO (history and art lectures, art-making programs – at Senior Centers, libraries etc.)
  • Program Execution & Logistics:
    Plan, coordinate, and staff mission-aligned educational and public initiatives on-site and off-site. Manage program supplies, budgets, and event setups.
  • Evaluation & Administration:
    Maintain departmental scheduling and reservation records. Collect qualitative and quantitative attendance data to support grant reporting and assess program impact.
  • Cross-Departmental

    Collaboration:

    Partner with the Marketing team on promotional strategies and work across departments to support broader organizational goals and special events.
  • Scheduling:
    This position requires working one Saturday per month and, with advance notice, some additional evening, weekend, and/or holiday hours. Regular local travel is required for programs and events.

Key Responsibilities (final portfolio determined upon hire)
  • Program Leadership & Curriculum:
    Conceptualize, plan, and execute a diverse portfolio of mission-aligned, formal educational programs. Manage all program logistics, including staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation for audiences ranging from K-12 students to adult learners.
  • Docent Program Management:
    Oversee all aspects of the docent program, including recruitment, comprehensive training, scheduling, and leading monthly meetings. Partner with the Director of Education to organize and deliver enrichment opportunities.
  • School & Group Engagement:
    Identify and build strategic partnerships with schools and educational organizations. Lead outreach efforts and serve as a lead art educator for structured on-site and off-site learning sessions.
  • Public Event Leadership:
    Conceptualize and host large-scale community events (e.g., Family Fun Days, Home Away From Homeschool, and seasonal festivals).
  • Outreach & Partnerships:
    Forge strategic partnerships with local community centers, regional artists, and youth organizations to co-create inclusive public programming.
  • Public & Adult Series:
    Coordinate informal public series, including lectures, social evenings (Cocktails & Conversations, History & Hops), drop-in art workshops, teen clubs, van trips and wellness programs.
Qualifications & Requirements

Required:
  • 2–3 years of experience in program development, community engagement, or event planning, preferably in a cultural or educational setting.
  • Strong leadership, project management, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse audiences and stakeholders.
