Position Summary

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Resident (APRN) functions as a member of the Psychiatry team and applies related skills acquired through their training to the treatment of Wheeler's patient population. The selected candidates will receive continuous mentorship while providing patients with direct clinical care and engage in formal weekly educational didactics, grand rounds with CME accreditation, quality improvement projects, and receive certification and training in new and alternative modalities of treatment including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Esketamine Therapy.

Wheeler residents will leave our residency program with enhanced clinical skills and tools to make a lasting impact on community health.

Education AND EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

Master of Science in Nursing and board-certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or American Nurses Credentialing Center are required.

Credential(s)

Required:

Licensed Registered Nurse and licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut. Active DEA controlled substance registration and an active Connecticut controlled substance registration.

Ability to acquire and maintain certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professionals no later than 90 days from date of hire.

LOCATION

Health centers located in New Britain, Bristol, Waterbury, Plainville and Hartford, CT.

SCHEDULE

Full time, starting in Fall 2026 for a one-year residency placement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations and formulate accurate diagnoses in accordance with the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5-TR), manage prescribed medication, perform mental status examinations, develop and present clear clinical impressions and recommendations that are specific and attainable, providing therapeutic interventions appropriate to specific problems. Develop and document clear clinical formulations in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of psychopathology and other behavioral health concerns and effective modalities of psychotherapeutic intervention.
  • Triage clinical emergencies and implement program specific safety and consultation protocols.
  • Utilize best practices and evidence-based practice models where appropriate and adhere to model and program expectations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of internal and external levels of care, referral processes and resources. Make clinically appropriate referrals for identified service needs in a timely manner.
  • Communicate in a positive, effective manner with clients, families, and all internal and external providers. Attend all required meetings, didactics and supervision.
  • Meet direct service productivity goals as defined by program. Demonstrate knowledge of program/department/agency goals and target outcomes, and adhere to practice standards and to data collection and reporting protocols.
  • Document all client related information in compliance with agency policy.
  • Attend and be prepared for scheduled supervision. Seek additional supervision or consultation as needed and follow through with supervisory directives.
  • Provide service in the office and/or community settings outside of the office (e.g., homes, schools, hospitals, institutions, other community locations) as defined by the program.
  • Communicate in a professional, positive, and effective manner with all clients, families, and collaborating professionals.
  • Continue to develop knowledge and understanding about the history, traditions, values, family systems, and artistic expression of groups served as well as use appropriate methodological approaches, skills, and techniques that reflect an understanding of culture.
