West Side - Unified Sports Associate Coach

Summary of AssignmentThis job assignment is accountable for assisting in the instruction of middle or high school student athletes involved in the District's Unified Sports program and providing leadership in helping each participating student achieve a high level of skill, and appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship and an increased level of self-esteem.
Minimum Education and Experience- Certificate of Completion for Module 15 from the Connecticut Coaching Education Program.
- Connecticut State Department of Education Coach permit or Temporary Coach permit.
- Current CPR and First Aid Certificates.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Successful completion of pre-employment process.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Motor Vehicle operator's license.
- Knowledge of care and treatment of athletic injuries;
- Knowledge of coaching techniques and human behavior;
- Knowledge of the specific assigned sport;
- Knowledge of the federal, State and Board policies and regulations regarding student conduct and appropriate disciplinary action;

- Assists in maintaining and completing necessary attendance forms, accident reports and similar paperwork;

Assists in planning and managing a regular program of practice in season; - Assists in planning and managing competition strategies for individuals and the team at Unified meets;
- Assists in recruiting students with intellectual disabilities, students with other types of disabilities, and students without disabilities for the team;
- Assists in the administration of a sports team which is composed of a proportional number of students with disabilities and students without disabilities;
- Assists in the purchase of equipment and supplies;
- Assists in the safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present;
- Assists players in the care and prevention of injuries;
- Assists with developing and implementing practice plans in which Unified Sports instruction is provided to all participants;
- Assists with field or court preparation;
- Assists with handling paperwork requirements and forms required by the District and Connecticut Special Olympics;
- Assists, when necessary, in scheduling contests and transportation as applicable;
- Attends all Unified Sports sessions, contests and city league meetings;
- Attends clinics, camps, and seminars as required;
- Attends coaches and rules interpretation meetings;
- Attends Unified Sports Coaches' training and completes online Special Olympics Unified Sports Coaches' course as required;
- Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary for successful performance in the sport involved;
- Collects all uniforms and equipment at the end of the season;
- Collects and maintains permission slips;
- Communicates with classroom teachers to encourage individual success of each player;
- Communicates with Lead Coach regarding coaching strategies and procedures;
- Complies with Board policies and District procedures in the development and maintenance of the interscholastic athletics program;
- Conducts oneself with tact and diplomacy;
- Develops and enforces training rules;
- Enforces written rules and regulations in consultation with the Lead Coach for distribution to all team members prior to the start of the season;
- Ensures appropriate attire at practices and events;
- Ensures practice and repetition of fundamentals;
- Ensures proper care of equipment;
- Ensures proper organization of practices and drills;
- Ensures safety of students;
