Backcountry Carpenter/Maintenance Technician (Seasonal)
Vermont Huts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to foster a deeper appreciation for our natural environment and strengthen Vermont’s communities by providing enriching and immersive outdoor experiences for all. We work to increase access to outdoor recreation and actively support rural economies throughout Vermont. To do that, we’re creating the country’s most innovative statewide, hut-supported trail network, intentionally routed into local communities and linking existing networks.

We’re looking for someone who not only shares our passion for outdoor recreation but is also excited to wear many hats, work closely and collaboratively with our existing staff of eight, and create new points of access to the outdoors.
The PositionWe are seeking a skilled and dependable Carpenter / Maintenance Technician to support the Huts Project Manager in the upkeep, repair, and improvement of our existing buildings, as well as the construction of a new hut for the upcoming 2026 season. The ideal candidate brings hands-on carpentry experience alongside broad general maintenance capabilities. The ability to work independently is a must.
This position requires travel within the state and overnight projects in backcountry locations.
This is a new role that reports to the Huts Project Manager and may be asked to assist the Trails Project Manager on occasion.
Essential Job Functions- Two years of carpentry experience
- 18 years or older
- Possessing a valid driver’s license required
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects
- Knowledge of carpentry techniques including framing, finish carpentry, and structural repairs
- Experience with building materials, fasteners, and construction methods
- Proficiency in the safe use of hand tools and power tools
- Ability to read basic design plans and drawings
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, and lifting
- Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must be willing to camp on site during new hut construction
- Knowledge of Solar electrical systems
- Experience with power equipment and machines (UTVs, chainsaws, etc…)
- Trail building and design experience
Our main office is located in Waterbury, VT, but our projects are located all over the state.
TermThis seasonal position will begin as soon as possible and is anticipated to complete in November, 2026, with potential for year-round employment for the right candidate.
Compensation$25 - $31 per hour based on experience.
