Water / Wastewater Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on the evaluation, planning, design, and construction of municipal water, wastewater, stormwater, and related infrastructure projects. The Water / Wastewater Engineer leads complex site civil and utility projects, supports municipal clients, and oversees project delivery from initial planning through construction and start-up. The position offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of treatment facilities, pump stations, and distribution systems within a collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering environment.
Responsibilities
+ Perform complex site civil, water, wastewater, and stormwater engineering and construction assignments for municipal clients.
+ Lead the planning, design, and development of water, wastewater, and stormwater projects, including treatment facilities, combined sewer overflow facilities, sanitary sewer stations, booster pump stations, and transmission and distribution mains.
+ Direct engineers and technical support staff in the preparation and review of plans, specifications, and technical documents for water, wastewater, and stormwater projects.
+ Oversee projects from planning and procurement through start-up and construction, ensuring technical quality, schedule adherence, and budget compliance.
+ Prepare detailed construction cost estimates and support project budgeting and financial planning.
+ Perform construction monitoring and coordinate field activities to ensure work complies with design documents and client expectations.
+ Review proposed contracts to identify key parameters, time schedules, milestones, and major task areas, and ensure alignment with project objectives.
+ Develop and manage project scope, procedures, and budgets, and adjust plans as needed to meet project goals.
+ Ensure all contractual commitments are met and that work is performed in accordance with client instructions and project requirements.
+ Attend and actively participate in client-facing meetings, including project meetings, council meetings, board meetings, and other stakeholder sessions, some of which may occur after regular business hours.
+ Maintain effective working relationships with internal divisions and departments involved in providing services related to the project.
+ Control and review project forecasts, schedules, cost estimates, and progress reports, and ensure robust project quality control.
+ Monitor project fees and budgets, identify issues, and report concerns to appropriate program managers and task leaders.
+ Support a collaborative project culture by providing guidance, mentorship, and technical direction to junior engineers and technical staff.
+ Utilize project management software and tools to track schedules, budgets, deliverables, and documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
+ Ensure compliance with applicable safety codes and requirements while visiting and traversing construction and project sites.
Essential Skills
+ Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
+ 5 or more years of experience with municipal water and/or wastewater projects.
+ Experience in the evaluation, planning, design, and construction of one or more of the following: water and wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, water mains, sewer systems, stormwater systems, and/or lift stations.
+ Professional Engineer (PE) registration in the state of Michigan, or the ability to obtain PE registration within 6 months.
+ Experience in civil engineering with specific experience in water and wastewater engineering.
+ Ability to lead and direct engineers and technical support staff on complex projects.
+ Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams.
+ Strong technical writing skills for reports, specifications, and project documentation.
+ Ability to visit and safely traverse construction and project sites while complying with all applicable safety codes and requirements.

Skills & Qualifications
+
Experience with municipal water and wastewater engineering projects, including treatment facilities, combined sewer overflow facilities, sanitary sewer stations, booster pump stations, and transmission and distribution mains.
+ Experience working as a Water / Wastewater Engineer in a municipal or consulting environment.
+ Proficiency with project management software is preferred.
+ Hydraulic modeling experience is a plus.
+ Familiarity with civil 3D or similar civil design software is beneficial.
+ EIT (Engineer-in-Training) or prior progression toward professional licensure is advantageous.
+ Experience in construction monitoring and coordination of field activities.
+ Experience reviewing and managing contracts, project schedules, and budgets.
+ Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a multidisciplinary environment.
